In need of a second guitar

I am wanting to get a guitar to leave at my girlfriend's house so I don't have to take my gear back and forth.

I don't want to spend a lot of money on something, but I don't want it to totally suck either.

She has a dog and her parent's dog comes over a lot to play and they are puppies, big puppies. One is a black lab/pit bull mix and the other is a german sheppard. So it is safe to say that they are going to continue to get larger. They also play rough. So.... On the off chance I set my guitar somewhere they can tackle each other into it. I don't want to freak out because they knocked my expensive guitar over.

Also this wouldn't be my main guitar. I just want something simple so I have something to play.

Also the amp I will be playing through is a Vox PA5.

I was thinking about picking something up from the Epiphone line. I would go Gibson, but it is silly to spend that much money on a guitar that has the very real potential to not stay in pristine condition, not even my main, and will be played through a 5watt ss amp. That just seems silly, so I thought an Epiphone would be a good choice considering the criteria.

I am liking the Epiphone Dot and the Sheraton II. The Dot is $400 and the Seraton II is $600.

My question.

Is the Sheraton II the same thing as the Dot, but all dressed up? Or is the Sheraton II just made better?

Also how good are these guitars bone stock? John Lee Hooker seemed to enjoy the Sheraton II.

If there is not much difference in construction I could find a better use for that extra $200.

Or is there anything similar that is better. IE semi-hollow or hollow, traditional body style, non tremolo, with humbuckers, good for the blues, and something that is readily available.

So what is the verdict?

Thanks,
Eric

I tried the Epi dot, and it failed to meet my standards, I prefer the Epiphone P 90 Casino, There is one here for 699, its a very neat guitar. Smooth, fat, punchy.

What didn't you like about the dot?

I did look at those Casinos first, but I would rather have something with humbuckers. I like p90's but I already have a guitar loaded with them. Plus getting one with humbuckers allows me to try some of the humbuckers I've had my eye on.

$700 is a lot more than I am wanting to spend.

This thing is going to be played using a $150 amp. The only real criteria is to not suck.

Have you looked at the Rondo site? The agiles seem to get a lot of good reviews and are nice guitars for not a lot of scratch.

Re: In need of a second guitar

PRS has a new semi hollow in their SE line that runs around $600.

...is it just me who thinks even $400 is a LOT of money for a guitar to keep at your girlfriends house, play through a 5 watt amp, and get knocked over by dogs?

The dot just felt cheap, The frets were rough and the pups sounded too thin to me.

Not just you. I was with him when he said big dogs and then he confused me by saying he was looking at Epiphones (headstock breakage factor), was going to play through a tiny amp and then semihollowbody (which I could picture getting smashed by a dog tackle).

Re: In need of a second guitar

Snag a Peavey Patriot off the "bay". They can be had for a bill or two, and you get solid MIA construction. Hard to beat for the price. Hard to beat, period.

Yes $400 is a lot. I am going to look for them used. They seem to be going pretty cheap off the internet. And I don't think it will be knocked over by the dog unless I leave it somewhere I shouldn't. I just didn't want to risk it.

Thanks for that tip!

Re: In need of a second guitar

If 600 dollars is cheap to you, I can recommend quite a few guitars. I wouldn't waste my money on an Epi DOT. Every one I played a few months back when I was looking for a hollow body were crap. I ended up with an Ibanez AS83 which sounds fantastic. The sheraton was much better that the DOT, but didn't play or sound as good as the ibanez, and was 100 dollars more. Just curious....if you want a guitar that cant be hurt easily, why a hollow body??? Why not get a good cheap squier strat or something similar?
