Hey folks.
I'm new to the forum and new to SD.
The guitars i have now have dimarzio's and emg's and i'm looking for the first set of duncans.
But there are many interesting pickups, i'm searching for a medium of high output pickup and passive.
Genre of music i play is and want pickups for are like at the gates, old albums of in flames, insomnium,...

I heard a clip of a crazy 8 and Found that appealing but it is a custom shop pickup and maybe you guys van say of that's a good options of are there better pickups for that style?
The guitars is a LTD ex401 (mahogany body and fixed bridge)

Greetings

Re: In search for a pickup set

I suggest you read up info on the Distortion, the Custom, the Custom5, the PATB1 and PATB2, and the Black Winter. All worthy of your attention according the the aforementioned bands and their styles.

What amp and effects are you using?

Re: In search for a pickup set

I'm a huge fan of the Crazy 8, but based on what you said you're looking for, I think I'd recommend the Distortion. When I initially loaded a Distortion set in my Les Paul, I found it too bright, but I think the maple cap may be the culprit there. I think with an all-mahogany guitar like yours, it'd do exactly what you want.

I am using an engl invader2 with a tube screamer and flashback delay

Re: In search for a pickup set

Since In Flames uses EMGs and insomnium's lead guitar uses the JB, the Distortion will be the easiest way to get you in the ballpark of these bands, tonally speaking.

Thanks for the info, going to look if one of the local shops has one in stock :)

Re: In search for a pickup set

I have a Distortion/Jazz combo in a Jackson Kelly, alder body. I find this set to be very versatile. They'll scream with your Engl, but will sound good tamed down, either on a clean channel or with the vol rolled off a tad (I like the big, open sound of the Duncan Distortion on a clean channel). Plus, if they're not what you're looking for, it's a good basis for comparison if you exchange them within the timeframe. And, they're easy to find used for reasonable prices on the ol' internet used, and are easy to resell if you change your mind.

Been a while since I listened to any of the bands you listed (not a fan of cookie monster vocals so--) will suggest ether a JB or Alt 8. The Alt 8 would be my preference and reason why I suggest these 2 is the guitar tone for all 3 bands is a little warmer and rounder than you normally hear in most metal. In particular with Insomnium IMO the ceramic mag Distortion with be a little shrill and harsh. The Alt 8 is a big sounding Alnico 8 pickup and like a JB on steroids. It's bigger tighter and more aggressive than the JB and hits like a sledgehammer. Running an Alt 8 with a Sentient in my 1993 solid KOA Carvin DC 127 and that set absolutely kills through my PRS Archon, MT 15 and my Boogies!!

Arch Enemy's three vocalists, throughout their carreer, never used the "cookie monster" vocal style either.

That kind of vocals is more akin to bands like Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Deicide, Bolt Thrower, etc. More old school death metal bands.

Nowadays the deathcore bands are also prone to use that vocal style.

Swedish Melodeath, like the bands the OP referred, used more of a raspier, screeching style, not the low, guttural, bellowed kind of vocals of the bands I posted above.

Re: In search for a pickup set

super cool thread here. Melodic Death Metal is my specialty. All above statements I agree upon for sure. My personal preference with this kind of music is probably the Alternative 8. It is a fantastic pickup. All the balls you want and has clarity with big output.
