In search of a new guitar, care to help?

Hi, For the last 6 years I've been playing the more traditional aspects of Metal (mainly Heavy, Power and everything around that including NWOBHM) using my trusted Mexico Fender Standard Stratocaster (2000 edition).
For reference let's say Iron Maiden (for starters), the '80s Helloween, Savatage, Riot, Heavy Load, Tokyo Blade, Shok Paris, Fifth Angel etc.

However I love the sound of my Strat (especially after a major job done where I replaced the entire pickguard with everything on it) playability is a different matter.

I need 24 instead of 21 frets and a neck that will allow for easy play on all registers, especially the upper ones and
I need a free-floating instead of dive-only tremolo where after one use won't require to re-tune the guitar!

With that in mind (and a budget of about 600 or so euros cash, that goes at about 750 euros list price) I start looking for a second guitar to complement my beautiful Strat.

So far I have come up with 3 candidates, what I need from you is some info on these as well as suggestions on other that I should check out.

Candidate no 1 and the less expensive of the group is the Schecter Omen-6 FR Extreme which at about 380 euros (list price 450) and with a push/pull for hum-to-single coil is a real winner for it's mid-to-low category.

Candidate no 2 is the flagship of Ibanez's RG Tremolo series, the Ibanez RGT42DX for I'm guessing about 600 euros (730 list price).

Candidate no 3 is the well known Jackson DK2 Dinky. Actually, although I can't seem to find any other version at Jackson's web page this one is way too cheap at about 590 list price to be the Pro Series version.
Plus the specs say Duncan Designed pus instead, the link for the local dealer can be found here although the page is in Greek (since I'm from Greece).
Still, all specs are in English so there shouldn't be a problem, however you can use an on-line web-page translator if you'd like.

So, any input on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

One important note however is that at this point I'm looking for good playability, good woods and materials, bodywork and craftsmanship.
Tone comes second at this point since after getting used to the instrument I'll more than likely pay another 500 euros or so to make it sound the way I want it to too!

Thanks in advance!

Re: In search of a new guitar, care to help?

I'm ashamed to say that Jacksons are my greatest weakness, I've only played them twice and under really bad conditions.
Once I played a Japan Jackson that cost thrice that DK2 but it sounded awful since it was on literally the worst amp I had ever heard, playability wasn't all that impressive either for the price...

Anyway, since no shop owner would let me try every Jackson they may have could you possibly point me to a couple that may seem to fit my needs?

Re: In search of a new guitar, care to help?

Jani from Sonata Arctica uses Ibanez guitars :3, but seems like the rest of them play ESP or LPs, lol.

Re: In search of a new guitar, care to help?

I'd recommend a good Jackson, from my experiences with Ibanez and Jackson. Haven't played any Schecters.

Re: In search of a new guitar, care to help?

The Jackson DK2 is definately the way to go. Schecter makes a good guitar as well, but for what you're looking for I believe the Jackson is superior.

I've been looking at the DK2 myself, and you need to watch closely where you buy it from. Some places are selling them with the Duncan Designed pickups from $599-$699 USD, and no case. I have found other places selling them for the EXACT same price, but with a Seymour Duncan USA JB/59' and a case for the same price.

I'm not sure what shipping and customs would cost to ship into Greece if you buy new over the web, but it may be worth it. I would also not hesisate to by one used from eBay.

I have a link on my laptop at work, and I'm mad that I can't think of the name of the site, but it was the best deal I'd found on a new DK2. You could get either Black or White, JB/59' pickups AND a case for $599. I want to say it was Guitar Asylum, but I'm not sure.

At any rate, the Jackson is the way to go.

Re: In search of a new guitar, care to help?

You might want to check out ESP Ltds. I used to play metal on a fender and it killed my hand. The ESPs have necks suited to fast and intricate music. Take a look at 400 series and above guitars. Most are around 600 dollars.

woah the Ibanez RGT42 seems alitte expensive.
i guess with price in consideration as well i'd say the jackson DK2 or even Soloist SL-3 or 4 (MIJ i believe)

However jackson necks are wider than most ibanez so when you talk about playability, best to try them both first at local stores. coz ibanez seems more comfortable for a majority of players.

I would suggest playing them in person to see which works best for your hands. After that, then I would suggest getting a guitar that comes stock with Duncan pickups that you already like the sound of.

Just go to a store and play them all (the guitars) and see what necks you like, then try to couple that with a HH guitar that comes stock with Duncans :D

The new DK2s come with real Duncans, though it's possible your shop may still have the older models.

I've been thinking about getting a DK2M myself. They're great guitars. Not US made Jacksons, but still pretty good.

Re: In search of a new guitar, care to help?

i would go with an ibanez, don't have much experience with jackson's but always thought ibanez makes great bang for the buck product. if you were'nt in europe i'd sell you my hamer californian(usa made), the playability is like butter and is just so well made, only prob is it needs a refinishing since i got drunk about 12 years ago and took an awl to it and inscribed the old signature for me and my ex(ahhh, the stupid and regretful things we do for love), i can't use it anymore cuz the wife realizes the inscriptions meaning.

Re: In search of a new guitar, care to help?

Schecter C1 Classic.

Re: In search of a new guitar, care to help?

Any of the Jackson Pro Series( The DK-2 is defintely one of them) should fall in your pricerange and considering craftsmanship and quality they blow away anything in the same range. The new models(started in 06) all have real seymour duncans and great floyds and therefore are probably the best bang for the buck you can find in europe. Just watch out for dealers selling the old models(with duncan designeds) for the same price.

Re: In search of a new guitar, care to help?

You might be able to find a used ESP M-2 for around that price and it would destroy all of those axes.

Or any of their agathis bodied variants, if you put the Hot Rodded combo in it. I get a lot of compliments about my sound even on an EC-100QM LTD. However, in general, I try to buy USA when I can afford to (but Korea and Japan are acceptable if USA is out of budget).

Re: In search of a new guitar, care to help?

Oh, too much info. Ok, so I should check the ESPs/LTDs out, however I have heard that they (kinda like Jackson) are either not worth the money at the lower end or excellent instruments at the higher, harder-to-reach priced models...

I'll check however...

The C1 looks sweet but it has a fixed bridge and I was thinking of a Floyd Rose-ish kind of bridge instead (the -ish meant that if it were an Ibanez Edge Pro or sth like that then same difference...)

Thanx though!

Well my ESP LTD EC-100QM is $300 with krappy ESP LH-100 pickups. Swap in the Hot Rodded combo and it sounds great. I can't honestly think of any reason for me to get rid of it, as so far it's never failed me. However, its body is made from agathis.

Re: In search of a new guitar, care to help?

Play them all and see which you like best. If you can't decide between them, then just buy one of each :D
