In the wrists or thumbs?

This is an odd question, but it refers mostly to quick runs.

Are you supposed to just control the pick with your fingers, or your overall wrist and keep your fingers in place? Simply because recently I've seen a lot of guys who pick quickly almost exclusively between their thumb and index, while I've always been taught to always use wrist to play everything.

Re: In the wrists or thumbs?

I've seen ultra fast people who's hands seem to remain motionless, but I go from the wrist. My index/thumb combo just isn't that nimble.

Re: In the wrists or thumbs?

That just looks weird and somehow disturbing. lol

If it works for him though, he can go for it. I try to use my wrist as much as possible, but I can't play too fast and still keep it clean.

Re: In the wrists or thumbs?

I use my wrist, speed doesnt come overnight. It takes alot of practice and make sure your notes come out clean.

Wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist wrist.

I moved from using wrist/finger movement to wrist only recently, and I can go so much faster it's almost ridiculous.

Re: In the wrists or thumbs?

It's all wrist but very effecient at that to gain maximum speed and accuracy. When someone uses their wrist and can play fast you can hardly see it move at all. When they do scalar runs it almost looks like their hand just hovers over the strings the movements are so subtle.

Re: In the wrists or thumbs?

Depends on what exactly I´m doing, my picking movement can be just fingers or even go so far as to incorporate the shoulder.

But for the most part wrist with a hint of elbow mixed in ;)

Re: In the wrists or thumbs?

For speed, I just step on the accelerator.

:smack:  OHHHHH, you meant on guitar!

I have no idea. I have no speed.

Re: In the wrists or thumbs?

I use my wrist for the faster stuff.

I used to use finger motion (I am unschooled) and over the last several months have worked a lot on switching to wrist motion. It set me back on speed initially, but I find that my picking is much cleaner and it better facilitates switching strings this way.

Fixing self-taught roadblocks in my technique has proven to be an uphill battle, but I'm soldiering on......

Re: In the wrists or thumbs?

I use my wrist to change strings and my thumb/index to actually pick.

Some times if I really want to go fast I'll use my wrist instead of my fingers, since it's faster... Most the time that's not nessary.

Re: In the wrists or thumbs?

Both
It depends on wich kind of picking you need.alternate picking is allways wrist for me(wrist and arm)
Alternate/economy picking is mostly fingers ,since the distance between two pick positions are to small.
If i play speed riffs ,i hold my fingers stable ,and try not to move.I play very thick strings so it is important.

The pick itself is important too.thin picks let yoo move faster ,but the tone sucks.Mid/hard picks are better to use your wrist
