Incoming New Amp Day, & It's A Pretty Sweet One!!!

So yesterday I listed a few items for sale on Reverb. One of them a very nice guitar that I didn't play very often, mostly because it was so nice & rather expensive. I also listed another cheap guitar that I had modded & my Fender H.R.D. which I loved but didn't use much because I've got smaller amps with that same vibe for home practice.

My thought process was if I sold the guitars I could buy something else that was equally as nice but also a bit more rugged & something that I'd actually play more than once or twice a month! I was mostly interested in Telecasters but I didn't see anything I couldn't live without. As for the Hot Rod Deluxe, I figured if it sold I could look into getting a small head to replace it or I'd just end up with a few extra bucks in my pocket...

Today it was like someone flipped a switch & BAM, literally everything sold within 10 minutes of each other!!! While I was checking out guitars on Reverb (I never did find something, looking for a nice MIM if anyone has one?) I came across a amp that I decided I just had to have & now that I had a couple grand in the olé PayPal account I could actually afford it!!!

Enter the Supro 1642RT Titan...
image.jpg

The 1642 sports 50 Class A Watts of power (YES, I SAID 50W's!!!) through a pair of cathode biased 6L6's, 4 12AX7's, & a single 12AT7 preamp tube. Other appointments are, tons of vintage clean headroom, all tube reverb, output tube tremolo, a silicon grid rectifier that works just like a valve but its much more reliable & never burns out, and a specialty speaker!

All this is wonderfulness stuffed into a nice little single ended 1X10 combo amp!!!

I'm a big pedal guy so the fact that I'm not going to be getting a whole lot of dirt from the amp doesn't bother me in the least. Actually it was exactly what I wanted, a pedal platform with LOTS of headroom!!! That's not to say that you can't get real tube breakup from it, you absolutely can, but it would pretty much have to be dimed and it would be more of a vintage Blackface kinda dirt? I guess the best way to explain it is being more added compression than physical gain as we know it today???

I have actually played one before & I remember being completely blown away by its tone! I was also very impressed with how good it sounds at lower volume levels, pretty much the same as it does at higher volume levels! Unlike other big headroom amps this one gets louder rather gradually instead of going from barely audible to "Where's my F-ing earplugs?"!!!

LOL, so now I'm counting down the minutes until she arrives & I never did find myself a stupid guitar!!!

Congrats. That's a great amp! Are you still rocking the TSA15 also? Curious what n you're using for dirt and what you'll use for dirt on the Supro?

Did you buy it from a dealer? *I would recommend to buy used because you'll know it's been put through its paces. Just as a fyi, I got two Supros last year from Sweetwater and I had huge QC issues. I hope you have better luck than me.

I had a Coronado's Tremolo circuit go out on me (no trem when dimed). Sent it back and swapped it for another model since it was on back order. I had the Tremoverb crap out on me after a month. Luckily my Sweetwater tech bailed me out. Twice. Could be that Sweetwater had a couple of duds floating around. Don't know, but I wouldn't shell that much cash for a new one again. Used... eh, maybe. It'd have to be a stupid good deal and probably the tremoverb. I still have the NOS power tubes for it lol.

They sound incredible though. The modulated reverb on the tremoverb just captivated me. It was extremely lush and inspiring. Your Titan is the tremoverbs big brother. Just about the perfect pedal platforms. Didn't have any issues with my pedals clashing with the amps. Amp cabinets and tolex look super classy. Speakers sound great. The stock EH tubes are pretty good too. Clean and overdrive tone are different from the norm. Pretty cool tone to have. Congrats and wish you the best of luck

Edit: I did take gut shots if anyone wants to see what's under the hood. They seem well built.

I am... The TSA-15 is now, & probably will be for the foreseeable future, my "main amp". I've even got another white one in storage just in case my black one $#its out on me. I can just swap the chassis around and I'll basically have exactly the same amp!

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love "BOUTIQUE AMPLIFIERS", but the TSA will always have a special place in my heart because it's pretty much the perfect amp for me! A relatively cheap 6v6 amp that throws out beautiful Fender like cleans, warm mild tube breakup when pushed or via a Mid-Bumped E.Q., its switchable from 15W-5W, & it's just an amazing pedal platform!!! That is essentially what I look for in a tube amp, however I do want to get another 6505+ eventually, sometimes I do miss having a straight up no frills high gain monster around...

Here's what I'm running for pedals regularly these days...

Please excuse the crummy photo, I didn't feel like finding my phone...

I guess for the Supro I'll likely lose the E.H. Metal Muff & there probably isn't a whole lot of sense in running my MXR reverb pedal since the Supro has an amazing 6 spring real reverb tank? Otherwise it will pretty much stay the same. My two Wampler Clarksdale's, the Wampler Triple Wreck, a E.Q. behind my dirt boxes, & my Keeley Rencino Delay.

The Supro doesn't have a effects loop so I'll have to run everything out front, luckily my Keeley kinda prefers to be used that way unless it's going into a higher gain amp....

Yeah, I did buy it from a actual Supro dealer. I've got 30 days to return or exchange it no questions asked & then I also bought a 3 year extended warranty which was probably a waste of time and money but it makes me feel better, LOL!!!

I'm glad that it made you feel better about it lol. I don't think it was a waste from my experience. I lucked out, but would've been S.O.L. had it been a little longer. Don't think I would purchase one new without warranty. Maybe in the future as I have seen replaced the Supro(s).

Back to the amp, congrats haha! Like I said, that reverb plus trem is fantastic. These amps respond well to NOS tubes if you're willing to tinker. I had an old RCA 7025 that worked well in V1 of the tremoverb. RCAs in the power tubes. I kept the reverb driver/phase inverter/trem tubes stock.

That's a cool amp. Congrats.

Not that it matters but, I'm pretty sure it's a class A push-pull, not single ended.

Re: Incoming New Amp Day, & It's A Pretty Sweet One!!!

I played a Supro like that at NAMM. Wow! It had a really wonderful tone. I wouldn't hesitate to own one...so good score!

Re: Incoming New Amp Day, & It's A Pretty Sweet One!!!

50w into a single hemp cone 10" sounds cool to me! looks great too. gotta be kinda heavy for a 1x10 amp though right?

Only about 45lbs, that's not heavy for a little 1X10... LOL!!!

Apparently that, & the amount of power per pound, is where it got it's name from???

On another note, I think I just found a brand new Tele for a great price that would go perfectly with it!!!

Well perhaps not at first, it may need to be modded into a more traditional Telecaster pup layout but I'm going to give it a shot stock first?

I mean on one hand I kinda dig the 3 Custom Shop Nocaster bridge pup's all wound exactly the same on a 5 way switch! On the other hand I think I might miss that neck & bridge working in unison Telecaster tone, not to mention the hum-cancelation you get in position two??

That's a story for another thread though.....

Re: Incoming New Amp Day, & It's A Pretty Sweet One!!!

id like that better if they were all reverse slant

Re: Incoming New Amp Day, & It's A Pretty Sweet One!!!

Yeah, it's definitely different but I got the Triple Tele & a Gator hard case brand new for $500 shipped on clearance!!! I figure if I don't love the sound of it stock I'll just pull everything & re-wire it.

A new guard is only $15 & I'm sure I could find a set of my preferred Duncan Tele pup's (STL-2/APTR-1) for under $100 used or I suppose I could just use some of the Telecaster pickups I've already got on hand & save even more? Aside from those two things I've got everything else I'd need to turn it into a traditional Telecaster here already & considering what I saved on the guitar I can afford to buy a couple aftermarket items to go into it...

Re: Incoming New Amp Day, & It's A Pretty Sweet One!!!

Woah! What model Tele is that? COuld you get a Megaswitch to make it so both neck and bridge are on in position 3?
Now that is a Tele I might even use...haha.
