individual volume

Is it possible to wire two pickups to individual volumes (like les pauls...) so that when the both pickups are selected and you turn one of the volumes down it won't go completely silent? I understand why it doesn't work the normal way, just wondering if it is possible :)

Thanks :)

Re: individual volume

Well, the outputs of the volume controls are feeding the pickup selector switch, and normally those outputs are shorts to ground when the pot is turned down all the way. Therefore, if you wire the pots that way, you'll always get nothing when both pickups are selected and one volume is down all the way.

Maybe you could wire them up "backwards" like the volume pots in a Jazz bass. (Would that work?) That shorts the pickup out when the volume is all the way down. (Does anyone know if that could hurt the pickup?)

Re: individual volume

I think it will give me some noise if you lower the volume all the way down then as I wouldn't be connecting the the tip to ground... I think I rather want a blend pot.

Re: individual volume

Now I'm wondering, is there a way to bypass the pickup selector switch in the middle position? so on one side you select neck and on the other you select bridge but in the middle they both go to a blend pot, is that possible?

Re: individual volume

I have my doubts about achieving that with a regular 3-way toggle. Maybe you could do it with a Superswitch. Is there a reason why you need both a selector switch and the ability to blend? You might have to accept an extra toggle switch or something goofy like that.

Re: individual volume

Why would it be an issue if it goes completely silent?
You can still blend the two, just don't hit zero?
Even if you had a blend knob, you would probably still make it silent by going too far one way or the other.

I think if you went pickups ->switch -> pots -> jack, or pickups -> pots -> switch -> jack, it'd do the same for both, You're providing a connection from hot to ground.

Yes. It Does.

No. It does not.

Do-able.

Neck PU > Neck Volume* > one pole of selector switch
Bridge PU > Bridge Volume* > other pole of selector switch
Combined signal feeds to output socket
Side chain to Master Tone Control

* Volume pots are wired Fender Jazz Bass style, just like Jessie said.
