It's just a personal preference. You can do the tongue and groove or some other method if you want to join two pieces of plank to make the body. I prefer to use a lathe to round out the neck because it is much faster and more accurate.
Cool thanks for the tip

I normally just jointer the boards edges until they are square.... slightly sand them and glue and clamp...... Plenty strong enough for me...

But this Lathe idea for necks is going over my head... I take it you would have to take a large square piece of neck wood, Round over part of it on a lathe.. Then cut it in half and make 2 necks out of it? I'm i right at guessing how you do it? I'd like to see that in action with my own eyes... i'm sure it can be done but it is a way i have never heard anyone do before...

For me making a strat or tele style neck starts out as a 1 inch rough board... planed down to 3/4 of an inch.... do all my markings in pencil.. route out the truss rod.. rough cut out the neck and thin the headstock area out with a router table and sanding blocks, Place the dots or markers in the fingerboard, glue the fingerboard on and sand the edges to my lines i have drawin in before hand... Fret... Then to round the neck i use files and rasps.... Takes no time at all..... A good set of files and a good rasp makes it easy work.... I like V shape necks myself.... and my necks i like thicker in the upper frets but thin near the nut

As I said, it is a personal preference. If you think you can make an acceptable neck the way you do it, I have no objection to that. I actually made a template to have my cutter to follow and I can get it very close to the dimension I want. I can even do my sanding on the lathe before I cut it. It does not take a lot of time. I use the same method to make my fret board. I can also make "V" necks with the block off center and cut three curve surfaces before I sand it down. The beauty of using the lathe is that I can have a gradual change of radius and I can make it very accurate, down to about 5 thousandths on dimensions and great surface smothness, definitely not achievable by hand. May be you can, but not me.

Same goes for joining. If you think you can accept a body by bud joining the planks. That is fine with me. I just want mine to be stronger.
