info on active pickups

I had a emg81 and two emg singles complete with treble/bass expander curcuit and I thought it sucked. I currently have a set of livewire strat pickups and I like them much better than emgs. Quieter, cleaner, clearer and far more headroom than the emg's. I should have tried the 18volt mod but nobody knew about that mod back in 1990 when I sold that guitar.

Snowdog

so you reccommed the SD's for single coil sized pickup's

Re: info on active pickups

Just in case the EMG/Livewire idea is still floating around: this is NOT possible without installing some kind of phase inverter... it´s possible, but it´s not feasable for i´d say 90% or more of the people out there, ´cause then it becomes electrical engineering and not just soldering ;)

Re: info on active pickups

The livewire singles are very good sounding and powerfull pickups. They still sound like a single coil without the noise. I would like a hot version for the bridge though since I have the vintage bridge.

Snowdog

+1 to the bridge
thanks for the input

Re: info on active pickups

next question could i wire a strat style layout so that the neck tone knob controlled all three p-ups and use the middle tone for a pre-amp knob(which i believe i need to have)
second do i have to change my output jack on my guitar

Re: info on active pickups

Tux, you really don't want to mix SD and EMG active pickups. Even if it is possible to electronically change the phase of one makers pickups, thats a lot of processing to do to an already processed tone. Stay with one maker.

Yes you can wire the guitar master volume/master tone and use the middle tone pot for whatever purpose you like. I do that all the time with passive Strats.

You will need to change the output jack of your guitar from mono to stereo (tip/ring/sleeve) in order to use active pickups, The ring acts as a switch to connect the battery into the circuit when the guitar is plugged in.

You'll have to change the pots out as well. Strats come with 250k pots typically, humbucker guitars come with 500k pots and active pickups need 25k pots.

Re: info on active pickups

For a pickup combo for EMGs, I think you would do well to get 85 in the bridge, 60 in the neck. That will provide you with the most versatility you could get from EMG active pickups.
