Inner/Outer Coils in Series?

I did it with one guitar. Can't remember which. It gives two different sounds, but you must do a mag flip and "reverse" wiring for them to remain humbucking. (Which isn't difficult.)

It did. Although, it's dependent on which pickup you do it with. Generally, the studs sound a bit beefier, with a little more punch. The screws seem to be a bit brighter. But then again, you have to consider their position. The bridge screw coil will be closer to the bridge than the stud. I've never tried them with the pups rotated.

IIRC, it was a Distortion set that I did this with.

I think I just did mine in parallel. It's been more than a decade. But, it would be worth reinvestigating, using all the options.

I like parallel a lot better. Depending on how hot the pickups are, series coils that far apart wind up sounding pretty muddy to my ears.

I use inner and outer in parallel too and love it. Of both I would guess the inner in series may be more usable. A bit like a middle hotrails? But I don’t think I’ll try it

on my black tele that has an antiquity ii firebird pup neck and an a5 tele bridge pup i wound, i like the series option a lot for slide and maybe a thick solo sound so i do find it useful, even if its the least used position on the 4way

I saw diagram that had both inner and outer coils in series in addition to the standard two humbucker options. Wondering if that would be worth the effort.

The particular setup I mentioned did the following:

Neck
Outside coils in series
Neck and Bridge
Inner coils in series
Bridge

I like how Charvel does it on the DK24, but that is entirely too much wiring for me.

A number of years ago ArtieToo posted diagrams for a coil swap mod. Granted, it wasn't inner coils and outer coils, but instead swapped the slug coils in series. If you rotate the neck pickup you accomplish moving the coils without too much fuss, but it's still combining a screw/slug and not the screw/screw and slug/slug that you may have intended in your first question.

Add in a second DPDT and you can have a split mode (mine are split to slug coils). I have two guitars wired up this way - an Epiphone SG was a C5/AP2P, and a Dean Soltero with a Dimarzio Super Distortion and 36th Anny. The only thing I wish I had was outer coils in parallel in split operation.

Search for "Coil Swap Mod" and it shouldn't be too hard to find, that is, if the diagrams are still live.

It's the bridge slug, in series with the neck screw. For a "virtual" middle humbucker. I think. I'm getting old.

It seems to be most common on an old PRS style 2-hum 5 way design. The pickups are magnetically reversed from each other, which is essential for the “stratty” sounds. Therefore if the 2hums were engaged together, they’d have the out of phase sound. So this is the best compromise to get a middle humbucker sound.

i have a couple guitars with this scheme. I think it sounds good, and serves it’s purpose. As always, whether it’s better than 2 humbuckers together is a matter of taste, but in my opinion definitely has that vibe. I prefer just two humbuckers in the center, but for this type of switching it certainly works well.

You can wire up a version for split operation, but the most basic version uses a single DPDT to swap the screw coils. In the bridge position you get the bridge slug in series with the neck screw coil. In the neck position you get the bridge slug coil in series with the bridge screw coil. The two sounds are pretty similar, but the neck position is a tad brighter due to the use of the bridge screw coil's proximity to the bridge.
