Installing pickup covers

I am installing chrome pickup covers on my SG Special. I have never done it before and found two YouTube clips on the subject

I am leaning towards this install

Re: Installing pickup covers

This I dont trust, couldn't I get some clicking on the pickup if there is movement between the cover and the pickup?

Re: Installing pickup covers

Put a barrier strip of cardboard or tape between the slugs and the cover to stop rattle. If you have the cover soldered on tight you may not need to pot the pickup afterwards. If you get microphonic squeal then you need to pot.

Re: Installing pickup covers

Went with a bit of silicone. I love the tone it really didn't change much, I will solder them down in a week or so when I am totally comfortable with the concept. I think it looks very Black Sabbath I am digging it.

Re: Installing pickup covers

a lot of peeps put a strip of that blue masking tape in there to help feel the vibrations down. I've always had great luck with dipping the cover in the same blend of wax I use when I want to pot a pickup - just clean off the outside right away.

Re: Installing pickup covers

I went with masking tape completely covering the slug side and partially over the adjustable pole-pieces side. Then I put a little line of silicone along that on the slug side and slid the cover on. I couldn't get the damn solder to stick to the base-plates of the pups with my crappy 40W soldering iron though, and didn't want to damage them by holding the iron there for too long. So, what I did instead was run a ground wire from the back of a tone pot, spliced two wires to the end of that and soldered them to the outsides of the covers near the bottom. Then I siliconed around where the base-plates meet the covers for the extra solidity that the solder would have provided. Worked out great. I really prefer the look of chrome covers to the bare zebra humbuckers on my Jackson King V. I think its worth the barely perceivable change in tone.
