Installing strings on a Kahler locking trem

Re: Installing strings on a Kahler locking trem

Replace one string at a time. Stretch and tune it before starting on the next string. That trick keeps the tension on the bridge, so you don't have to spend ten minutes tuning, and retuning the strings until you have the ballance correct on the bridge.

Re: Installing strings on a Kahler locking trem

I just broke my high e twice :(. Im gonna just sit my new BC Rich on the shelf untill I go to get new pups in 2 weeks, then Ill ask the tech to just restring it and set it up for me. Might actually save me some money at the rate im going.

Re: Installing strings on a Kahler locking trem

Yeah, I broke a couple of strings when I was first learning how. I generally start by putting on new low strings frist, one at a time of course. I think it's been about 5 or 6 years since I've broke a string on that guitar.

Re: Installing strings on a Kahler locking trem

Ah, Daisy and I seem to have the same learning curve :friday:

What also helps (I´m assuming we´re talking about a 23xx or 31xx series trem or hardtail w/ fine tuners) is if you "pre radius" the ball end a little bit, bend it into a light curve so it catches easier ;)

Re: Installing strings on a Kahler locking trem

leaving the guitar with a missing string wil totally deform the bridge and you will need to get it set up completey new which could be expensive and willtake some time. It's definetly better to start with a low string so you'll get a feeling of how far you can strech the strings.

I´m not quite sure what you mean by deform. It won´t damage the bridge itself, nor cause warping on the neck.......Could you please explain? :)

I was going to say the same thing...sure the other five strings will be out of tune, but it won't damage anything. You can even leave a guitar without strings for a little while (or a long while, if you loosen the truss rod,) and nothing will get damaged.

Re: Installing strings on a Kahler locking trem

i never wnated to say that it would do damage but with the string pull of the five other strings the bridge will get out of tune totally and it's very time consuming and unnerving to get it back to where it was. So my motto is: keep all the strings on the trem and save time because you don't have to set it up all over again(not needed if you let a tech do it but i prefer doing it myself)

I do the same thing. After I cut the ball off I put a little bend in it. It helps it to feed through where the locking part of the bridge better, and I read somewhere that it keeps the core of the string from pulling through the outer winding.....I don't know how much of that last part is truth vs folk lore though, so your mileage may vary.

Re: Installing strings on a Kahler locking trem

Daisy, I think we´re talking about different trems.

On the Kahler floyds (Steeler, Spyder, Killer...), you have to cut off the ball end like on other Floyds (although there were also saddles that DIDN`T need this).

On the Flatmounts that most people refer to as "Kahler Trems" (because they were a totally different design), you have to leave the ball end like on a hardtail ;)

Which brings us to the question: Are we talking about a Kahler Flatmount or a Kahler Floyd? I was under the impression of the Flatmount....

I use a Spyder.

I donno. Maybe we should ask? :laugh2:

Re: Installing strings on a Kahler locking trem

A good trick to keep strings from breaking at the ball end with Kahlers is to apply some solder to the string windings at the ball end. This really helps with the unwound strings, which tend to break at the ball end a lot with Kahlers.

Thats the same guitar, only mine is like a light red/dark pink metallic.

Im not sure what kind of bridge this is because I dont know much about them at all. But, Im gonna get 2 hot rails, and a JB for it in the next 2 weeks, so I might aswell just get the tech to put new strings on the guitar after he changes the pups. Would save me the frustration (for now anyway).

Ill have to learn sooner or later :help:

EB used to sell a set designated RPS (Reinforced Plain Strings).

Re: Installing strings on a Kahler locking trem

at least we now know that it's a floyd system. i definetely wouldn't have it lying there with a missing string(ever seen a completely straightened foyd bridge? it's annyoing as el).But iff you gonna get new pups instaed by a tech then the setup schold be no probem but you woud still have to learn sometimes.
