Instetesting pickup idea?

Posting this before bed, so I'll see what you guys say tomorrow.

Anyway, I was wondering if, instead of pole pieces connecting to a bar magnet, I could just flip the magnet on its side and use it as a single long pole piece

Might be stupid. I dunno.

My little drawing of the idea:

So, two bobbins (which can easily be made thanks to stewmac providing the plastic)
With a bar magnet shoved in it like a normal pole price would be.
The bottom part was just my representation of a base plate to mount it in a guitar.
And, of course there'd be wire coiled around like in a normal pickup.

That has been done, I beleive El Diablo is like that but with ceramic spacers. The Slug also. I cant remember the name of the pup that usually acompanys the El Diablo but it's probably the same idea without the ceramic spacers.

Ofcourse I may be wrong since I've never opened one of theese up.

It can be done. It has been done, which does not mean you should not give it a try as well - you might love the way it sounds!

Thanks for the info (and the link). I wasn't able to find anything myself, but that happens a lot.. think my safari needs to be cleaned up.

I'll look into those and see if I can find some stuff

Haha that's the spirit!

The way I see it, you're just as smart as the first person who thought of it, they just happened to be first. And what you make might be a similar idea, but probably not executed in quite the same way so...go for it!

It would be similar to a rail pickup, magnetically, but a lot stronger since the AlNiCo bar is stronger than steel intermediaries. The stronger magnetism will probably make it sound more like a Strat or Firebird pickup.

The AlNiCo bar, causes less eddy current losses than steel, so you will get a higher Q factor, again, like a Strat or Firebird pickup. You might have to use 250k pots with it, if its would to have a higher resonant peak, for the same reason Strats use 250k pots.

Re: Instetesting pickup idea?

The Firebird is a good rail pickup as an example tonally, but also construction-wise....you need to pick a shorter magnet than standard humbuckers as the wire still needs to be wrapped around the end.

Re: Instetesting pickup idea?

lol, your coil design is pretty much a charlie christian single coil..... or at least like a bill lawrence designed thing

the seymour duncan El Diablo (originally Tony Iommi) uses a pair of Alnico II magnets as rail poles, it's accompanied in he neck by yet another duncan El Diablo (yup, the set is a pair of the same exact pickup, seems tony like to pair things paf like even with 20k monster humbuckers)

the seymour duncan SLUG uses the same construction as the El Diablo, but it uses ceramic magnets as rail poles (besides being wound up to wrecking 40k ohms for ultimate tonal obliteration)
