Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

What is the EQ like on these things? If you had to give bass, mid, treble a number...and what full size humbucker do they most resemble?

Bass 6, Mid 7, Treble 4. It sounds a lot like my wax potted Gibson Burstbucker to me.

Interesting. The PAFs in my '62 SG/LP are very dependent on their position. The neck is similar to what you describe, but the bridge is like bass 3, mid 6, treble 8, very much like a Telecaster.

If that is accurate- I'd love it. That doesn't sound like a old Gibson humbucker to me, though...I'd put that more like 7, 5, 7.

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

Apologies...I should have written that it sounds a lot like my wax potted Gibson Burstbucker 2 that I have in my Les Paul Special. I have edited my previous post. I realize that people say the Bursbuckers are bright but mine is not. It's wax potted and perhaps that's why not. I don't have to change EQ on my amp at all when I switch guitars and there's not a HUGE difference in tone between the two.

Mostly, it just sounds like an awesome, well made full size humbucker. I totally recommend it.

Has anyone compared the specs of these versus the Little Pearly Gates? AFAIK they share the same design goals have the same magnet underneath.

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

i havent heard the lil pg in a long time so cant comment on how similar it may be. the lil pg uses a2 if i rememberr correctly and the red devil uses a5.

for eq numbers, id say a 59b is 6/4/7. the rd bridge is 5/7/5 or something like that. this is a new guitar for me so i havent heard many pups in it but the neck rd sounds a little more open than the lil59 that was in there before

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

Oh, I guess it does now. I think in the not too distant past it used AlNiCo 5 also https://www.andertons.co.uk/guitar-...tom-shop-pearly-gates-for-strat-pickup-middle

"Devised to deliver Alnico tone in a small package, the Pearly Gates for Strat has two slightly overwound coils hugging an Alnico 5 magnet for raunchy Hard Rock and Blues."

Looks like the DC resistance values for this new model are higher, "13.96" compared to "11.4k in the bridge and 9.8k in the neck".

This is an EQ profile I like. Do you have an idea of what full size humbucker it might be close to?

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

I'm currently torn between this set and the Sinners by Bare Knuckle. In a way I want the humbucker sound but part of me is hesitant to part with that single coil sound. Maybe I'll pick up another Strat so I can have both.

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

the lil series pups dont sound like full size buckers to me. they arent usually as open and tend to be more dense in the mids so i dont know if it sounds like any of the normal production buckers. its a good sounding set of pups though, im quite happy with them. granted ive only used them on two gigs but i dont imagine they are going any where. i do need to fix the on/on/on switch for the bridge though

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

the bridge split sounds good, bright clear and jangley. noticeable volume drop compared to series but thats to be expected. wont know about parallel till i replace the switch

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

To my ears, single coil sized humbuckers don't sound remarkably different from hot single coils, like the SSL-4 or SSL-5, especially if you back those single coils pickups away from the strings a bit.

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

i definitely hear a difference between the ssl5 and ssl4 and lil59 and rails pups for example. the mid range and highs have different qualities to them.

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

oh and a bucker rout does not fit a reverse angle strat pup without some modification for those wondering :D

You had to go grinding away at that nice shielding paint?!?! :rambo: LOL, glad it is working out for you!

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

i did indeed. the bass side of the pup was not going down so had to extend the rout where the baseplate tab/mounting screw would go towards the bridge a bit. little work with a dull chisel and it slid down just fine :) really enjoying the guitar, thanks again!

When it comes to the high end, I'd actually say they come closer to the SSL-3, which is even darker than the SSL-4 or SSL-5. I think most of the difference is just in how they're marketed. I bet in a blind listening test, a lot of guitarists would have a hard time telling them apart.

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

Those SSL pickups don't sound like humbuckers (they don't have the thick, juicy humbucker crunch). It's a lot more than just marketing.

Re: Introducing the new Red Devil for Strat Set!

thoughts about the Red Devil Sound? how did you hear it? Does it have more gain than traditional single coils or approximately the same output?

I don't personally need to sound exactly like Humbuckers, I just expect to sound a like fatter than trad single coils but more defined than the Hot Rail Neck (I already tried this last, and I didn't like it ) lastly, Will I hear a dramatic drop in volume between my JB humbucker and the RD?

I want to put in the middle and neck position of this guitar, it has Hot Stack single coils, I'm not looking necessarily for a metal oriented pickup

In my other guitar I have Fender N3 Noiseless pickups which I love, but I want something different in this one
