Invader Bad Choice for an SG Standard?

Re: Invader Bad Choice for an SG Standard?

The Invader is a really good fat/beefy/powerful rhythm guitar type pickup but in no way is good for soloing. Its just to muddy of a pickup for soloing. As people have said before, install it and give it a shot, and if it turns out to not be what you want out of a pickup remember you still have the Seymour Duncan 21 day return policy. :)

It sounds horrible in my guitar, i'm going to return it, i highly doubt that anyone could use this pickup to solo...why does it say that on musician's friend...oh well..from here it's either EMGs or another shot at a different SD, I'm well open to suggestions

Re: Invader Bad Choice for an SG Standard?

I'd give the Custom a shot before you consider EMG's. I wouldn't give up on SD pickups just because one pickup you thought might work didnt work out for you......

Re: Invader Bad Choice for an SG Standard?

a JB through a well setup guitar and a good amp should have plenty of sustain.........any duncan should, especially in a nice guitar like yours........what amp you using?

Re: Invader Bad Choice for an SG Standard?

I had an Invader in my Epi Korina Explorer for a week and I just couldn't get a tone I liked. There was no sustain and it was very muddy. It also seemed to suck the life out of the neck pup too. I wound up getting a DiMarzio Super Distortion, which worked out.

Re: Invader Bad Choice for an SG Standard?

What was the problem with the Invader? Please be as specific as you can.

I've been thinking about the Invader for my own SG Standard for some cool tones, but I'm worried if it's too loose and muddy. Any comparisons to 498t from anybody? Karl Sanders from Nile uses Invaders in both positions in mahogany guitars and gets great tone, IMO.

Re: Invader Bad Choice for an SG Standard?

The problem was that the invader was muddy as hell and there was no clarification on solo's or anything, i was annoyed by the sound, from my personal experience i wouldn't recommend trying one in an SG..i think it has something to do with the mahogany, but if someone has had a better experience with it, please say so, i dont want to discourage you from getting the pickup..i just had a bad experience with it.

Screamin Demon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Trust Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Invader Bad Choice for an SG Standard?

I used to have an Invader in a S/G it was fat but sure wasnt muddy...I know the guys in Corriosion of Conformity were using Invaders in S/G's atleast around the time that the album "Americas Volume Dealer" came out. The height of an Invader can be a big issue... I would play with that and also explore the eq on your amp some if your going from the JB to the Invader your probably gonna hafta tweek your setup not just plug in and play. I've always had good luck with Invaders.

Re: Invader Bad Choice for an SG Standard?

I dunno, the Invader might work out. As has been mentioned, the SG has a thinner body, so the sound isn't as beefy as a Les Paul's. Also, the SG bridge pickup is set about 1/2 inch closer to the bridge, so that should brighten things up.

Re: Invader Bad Choice for an SG Standard?

i had the invader and i just exchanged it today for a custom..there was nothing wrong with the invader to me. at first it was muddy but you just have to lower it as stated. i play metal but not just metal. invaders aren't as versatile as a pickup for me but it has that fat tone that i like. I heard the custom and i had to get it. you can try the screaming demon but i heard some clips and it doesnt sound like its for me but i have to try it out myself.

i see you listen to thrice. i listen to thrice too and if you want a sound like them you should try the jb, distortion, or the custom (like me). i play in an sg too. i just recieved my jazz today and im getting my push pull pots soon.

what amp do you play through?

Re: Invader Bad Choice for an SG Standard?

I've got an Invader in my '75 SG Standard. Personally, I think it sounds like God. There's sustain for days, and more tone than I can carry in a bucket. I don't know if they'd work for every SG, but it's a great marriage in this particular instrument. I also have one in my '81 Dean Z Standard, another mahogany instrument. Absolutely no complaints in either case.

By the way, I've never had any problems with lack of clarity in soloing. They're a very powerful full tonal spectrum pickup, though, so you can't really boost the bass on them if you're doing today's metal.
