Invader/DD/500T oversized/triple mag swaps (pics)

Yep, I really like that one too, my favorite of the customs, I need to get another now that I found out I put the three mag setup in wrong.

How did it differ from the other Customs? I liked the regular Custom, but like most other ceramic mag pups, they tend to be stiff and BRIGHT with my LP. I think I need to get some 300k pots to trim back the treble.

Im still undecided what to do about which pickup to get. Right now I have the Iommi in there. Not a bad pup, but it's so damn dark, even with 1m pots. It's hard to get the crunch and harmonics Im used to with the JB and most neck pups sound brighter when I switch over.

Im kinda torn between the Ironman, the DD (with 300k pots) Custom (with 300k pots), Alt8, MAYBE a ToneZone or just buy another JB or make a JB8 or JB ceramic.

Ive never really looked into the Alt8. Does it have that rawwr thing going on, or is it a little more subdued? The only clip Ive heard of the Alt8 sounded like something was wrong with it.

Just for yuks I moved my alt 8 from neck to bridge, replacing my invader bridge, and I have to say I'm happier with it there, replacing the invader.

No, it's not quite as aggressive, but the difference isn't huge and the gains outweigh that for me. The bass is also thick, but the attack is clearer and rounder, and more discernible, especially in drop C. The mids are also there, but they seem more defined. And the added highs allow easier pinch harmonics (or something else does) and add some clarity. Finally, the lead tone is just sweeter.

King Izzo - Any reason why I couldn't slap an A8 mag into a neck invader? Any differences between that swap and a bridge swap? While trying the alt 8 in the bridge I moved my neck invader back to neck position. Unlike the bridge, it's a pretty trebly, clear pup that doesn't easily give me the tone all the way down, fuzzy neck leads like, but maybe swapping to an A8 may help warm it up.

What I didn't expect is that, playing the neck invader parallel with the tone rolled back midway, I had no issues playing a combo of high gain rythmn and leads, and it was actually more agressive than the alt 8 in the bridge (but not as big nor sweet sounding). No flubby/loose bass, etc. I guess that's the reason SD designed the neck's EQ the way they did. It'd be great if an A8 warmed it up a bit without loosing it's ability to deal with high gain. I'd like to avoid trying other neck pups if I can make this one work with a cheap mag swap.

I finally found one clip of the Alt8 by Surface54 that was really nice. I didnt notice any of that ear fatiguing rawwr thing, but it might be different in person. I'm really torn now between the Alt8, C8 and JB. I wish I had the time and money to try them all out.

Anyone know anything about the invader neck magnet, compared to the invader bridge?

Thanks

gvis, I don't know much about the Invader neck, never messed with one. I think it's just a small ceramic Jazz with the bolts though, so an A5 could work pretty well if that's the case. The bolts will add some low end, and you'll lose some definition to the attack, but it might be really cool. I would definitely try that instead of the A8 if I were you. In parallel the A8 might work, but I imagine it being real sloppy in series. I could be way off base here, I just don't know. Try it and tell us man!

SCX, I don't think the A8 midrange is grating, it's just prominent and hard to EQ out, it's a specific sound, so some people can't get along with it. Like I said before, I can't really describe it in a good way other than it has real RAWWR-RAWWR quality, haha. You'll probably just have to try it and see if you like it or not. As far as S54's clips, I don't notice recordings done with V30's to be grating either, but some people do.

You could get one of the Custom/JB/DD and a couple magnets and see what you really like. If you end up just not liking the pickup at all you can probably swap it for one of the others in the trading post.

I'm curious what Alt 8 mag swaps are like, spec looks pretty similar to a RTM.

Thanks Izzo. I think I'll just order an A2, A5 and A8 and compare them all.

You're probably right, man. I just like to know as much as I can before I buy something. I got 3 little ones, so dad's money doesn't go as far as it used to. And more often than not, something happens that make me spend money elsewhere. I just like to be edjumacated. :)

Essentially what I'm looking for is a pickup that sits in between the DD and JB. I love that DD grit and grind, but want softer highs and a little sponginess like the JB, but with the classic look of a chrome/nickel cover. The Alt8 looks like it might fit the bill, but maybe just using the DD with 300k pots will get me there.

IDK at this point. Haha.
