Invader single coil?

Re: Invader single coil?

The eBay add says humbucking/humbucking Strat, so that also confused me.

Re: Invader single coil?

A true single coil has the magnets as the poles. This pup has the large hex screws as the poles and the bar magnet underneath, just like a conventional humbucker. If you look close at the pic, you can see the bar magnet is between the pup and base plate (with the red stripe on it). It also has an "output" rating of 7.21k...a little less than one coil of an Invader humbucker.

This would make it a "single" (meaning just one) coil of an invader pup, NOT a true single coil pup. It has a custom baseplate that would allow for mounting in a Strat pickguard.

No, it is not 4 conductor, it is a single conductor with ground.

Re: Invader single coil?

Cool, thanks. It actually says 9.21k and not 7.21.

Re: Invader single coil?

A question then- why would someone choose to use a single coil from a humbucker rather than a true single coil? The Invader is an interesting pickup - one with enough output that, when it is split, is interesting on its own. I am guessing that is what they were going for.

Re: Invader single coil?

I had one briefly, but never used it. Here was one of my responses from my for-sale post:

The Invader Single Coil is indeed a single coil, not a stacked humbucker. Its height comes from two slender ceramic mags, just like the small outer magnets of a regular invader, which are butted against the oversized hex poles beneath the coil, but above the baseplate. I've been told the Invader SC does maintain some single coil character, but serves up a lot of punch!

You mean, it's not a "vintage-correct" single coil :)

It's still a "true" single coil in the sense that it has just a single coil and is not a stacked pickup. Look at all the lower-end Strat pickups that use ceramic bar magnets and steel poles instead of rod magnets. They're still regarded as "single coils", just not the type a true vintage enthusiast would likely prefer.

Furthermore, the Invader Single Coil is not *just* a single coil from the Invader. It's a custom wind aimed at a specific voicing. I verified this with the Custom Shop.

The one I had measured 9.5K, by the way.

Re: Invader single coil?

Thanks. So is the single coil hum more than a typical single coil or about the same?

And that's exactly what I said.

It's not only about being "Vintage". Most quality modern single coils have rod magnets. Like you say, the cheap single coils use bar magnets and steel poles. Those are "imitations" of single coil pups. But they are made that way purely for cost reasons (you wouldn't EVER pay $130 for one of those). And what about the tone?! I can't imagine a reasonably good guitar player preferring the tone of one of those cheap imitations over the true single coil with rod magnets.

That makes more sense. After looking more closely I see that the custom Invader single is actually 9.21k.

Re: Invader single coil?

It's just a different beast than a regular single coil; the design in and of itself isn't junk. As typical for me when pointing out good things, G&L comes up. Their MFD pickups are quality and a world away from the hollow, flat harsh-ness of Squier and MIM Fender pickups, and allow mounting closer to the strings/less impact on sustain from their bar magnet design.

Granted I prefer slug-pole singles; after all, if I want half a humbucker's tone, might as well split a full humbucker and have the option to use it full ;) Still curious how the Invader slugs would sound.

Funny thing, I'm wanting to replace the bridge single pup of my G&L Legacy. It's got the 3 CLF-100 pups, they actually sound great, but I want something with more meat/warmth in the bridge. I'm trying to make up my mind whether I want something warmer that still is close to single coil-ish or if I should just go for more of a humbucker tone. Maybe I should look into an MFD.

Re: Invader single coil?

I also noticed those, but they seem to be only wound to about 5.6k.
Resistance isn't an exact representation of output. They probably don't need to be wound that hot considering they have ceramic magnets and large poles.

Re: Invader single coil?

Yeah, that's true. They're cheap enough, I could always pick one up just to see how it is.

Re: Invader single coil?

Just so you know, those Dragonfires probably won't sound anything like the SD Invader single coil
