Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

You did and that's what put them on the map, for me! Though it was one of the newer ones, it happened to find it's way into a really bright guitar and I still love it! From there, I figured out the differences in the old and new ones...

I got that one from WyldBil. So you dig the old ones better?

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

I bought scottcrud's ironman... Foolishly sold it chasing paf metal tones 'sigh'.

I've thought about manlius as an alternative.

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

maybe so. But I like the way it sounds. Better than any Dunlop I've ever owned.

Mick makes great pickups. I can't recommend him more. And that Iron Man was one of if not the first one Jim made....Dayum, I should have never sold it.:banghead::mad::grumble:

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

I really, really like the Bad Horsie v1.

I haz WCR Ironman too, can't remember who I got it from, someone on here. Cool pickup.

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

It was a beast... I got a different ironman, but that beat up a8 version was 'the one'. I hunt for it all the time lol.

So do I! It only looked beat up because I removed the chrome cover for it, Jim uses a buttload of glue!

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

I looked it up, DWVNKY is who I got mine from, double cream C8, for $80, lol. Going in mah explorer soon.

I didn't like it much with an A8 in it, big ceramic was tits, but I put it back to stock, I needed the fillster spacer I was using for another pickup.

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

The C-8 is the way to go with that pickup, and if you really want to go out on a limb and hear what it can really do, disconnect the tone controls and replace the volume pot with a 1 meg pot. Trust me. And you got a freaking steal! You beat me to that one, it had short leads on it right?

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

Stop it! You guys and your Ironman talkings. I've been wanting to try one, but alas, the kids get their toys before dad does.

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

it doesn't really brighten it, it's almost like the pickup is wired to the output, which is what the guy that Jim designed the Iron Man for suggested I try, and since I have to use a volume knob he suggested the 1 meg, and I haven't looked back since.

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

First one I let go due to 'PAF hype'... yes PAFs are great, but the Ironman is greater bwahahaha... second one was double cream and I finally had enough of looking at my guitar with double cream pickups hahaha... so for now the stock 500T and 496R are in there.

I tried a parallel axis thingy and it was not for me. I am just saving any decision making and hunting for a used IM again, may even save for a new set.

Had the last one paired with the Darkburst neck. Insanely good neck pickup, and I never use those!

I actually preferred the Alnico 8 in my first one... was real thick and raunchy. Ceramic was great too, but a little more hifi and 'clean'. Jim has me hooked... I tried to find reasons to switch but always miss that sound and attack. It's like nothing else I've tried. Hot, but warm... cleans up well and has a low mid growl. I really need to stop going on these forums!

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

I think the newer IMs have an oversized ceramic, which I heard is a bit 'chewier' than the small ceramic.
