Invaders or Custom 5/Alnico II Pro HB

I recently bought a standard sg with plans to put another alternative 8 in the bridge but now Im having second thoughts. I love the alt8 to death but I need to change things up a bit. I play with fairly saturated distortion nearly 100% of the time. The alt 8 is great for it but its just a little too hot for the sound I want out of this new sg. I need clarity and huge body and beef coming out of this guitar for songs Im writing. So Ive come to two choices. Invaders bridge and neck or Custom 5 bridge and Alnico 2 pro neck? Chords are my main concern here with this guitar. Big sus chord clarity is needed under moderate to nearly saturated distortion

If you need big heavy sounding chords than ring out clearly, you don't want something that has a strong and narrow mid focus, as that will make the notes smear together.

Custom 5 is a great solution for that: medium output, slightly scooped mids, strong bass.

Another option that's higher output would be the Dimarzio Steve's Special, if you want to look into that too.

Thats my problem now is everything is too mid focused.. things just smear together. I swapped my speaker out for a creamback H and it helped. Custom 5 seems to be the way to go. The alt 8's have quite a mid spike in them too so its time to change. I appreciate it man

The Custom 5 or regular Custom should work, the Custom is slightly scooped and the C5 is very scooped. The Invader is definitely going the wrong direction. The Perpetual Burn might one to think about too.

You are stressing that you want clarity. The Custom and Custom 5 are good pups, but they are still pretty high output. I think you'd be better off with the C/59 hybrid. It has really good clarity with slightly scooped mids, but still has some oomph to it.

I forgot to mention this will be my new drop C and D standard guitar. Would the hybrid handle drop C with ease? I know the custom 5 does but like you said it is high output. I need to be more in the medium output range for clarity

The only reason I like the invader is to hybridize the living bejeesus out of it. use it with a fullshred, call it Harry and seriously, it will blow your head clean off. Get rid of the polepieces, install A5 slugs, use a coilsplit and you've got a great pickup for almost anything (including great singlecoily tones with a split). but on its own? nah, so 80ies.

The C5 is one of my favorite stock pickups, but even then: please, the 59/Custom hybrid. So much better, cause it's more dynamic, less scooped (but slightly still) and epic harmonics.

My local guitar tech pretty much quoted everything you just said. I just might have to follow your advice

Oh you doing low tunings! Hmm the C5 isn't as hot as the actual Custom and I would say it's closer to a medium output than a true hot output but... it can get pretty bassy. Never tried the 59/Custom Hybrid but if you're doing drop tunings, maybe it's a good idea to try that out to prevent your low strings from sounding like a tuba.
