Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

Re: Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

Adrian did a lot of the record with his SG and his 30th anni marshall. The SG is stock. Either T tops or Tarbacks.

Re: Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

If a band is going to run three guitars, I want to hear all three guitars.

So do I. Unfortunately, in this case, it sounds like 2 guitars, with a smaller, quieter guitar sound somewhere in there.

Re: Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

They had a great sound around that time. Live too. Pretty easy to nail with a JMP-1 preamp.
Getting those early 80's sounds down to a T, proves much harder though. Even though it's no secret what they used (it's in the booklets and all over the net these days), how they used it and in what order the pedals were is still kind of a mystery.

Re: Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

I think for 3 guitars to sound individually they need to play different notes, en example is their harmony in melodies. But when they play the same riff along I don't expect to hear note separation but actually a stronger riff. Being that said, I think their problem is more about the mix rather than their tone.

Re: Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

Three guitars can work - I record like that a lot actually - you just really have to pan tracks hard in their directions. You also can't go for a guitar tone that sounds thick on it's own - that times three will turn everything to mud. The different EQ setting for each guitar with different focuses works wonders as well, and a good rule of thumb would be that you need less OD/Distortion with each guitar you add.

Re: Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

And the thing with 3 guitars is that you gotta be VERY tight. If you're not completely tight, it's mud galore.
