Irrational amp lust - Hovercraft?

Re: Irrational amp lust - Hovercraft?

Hiwatt tone is muy bueno. It's like a tasty meat pie of goodness.

Speaking of meat pies, I can't wait for this toothache to be gone so I can have a hot pocket.

Ugh, that sucks.

I'm fighting off a sinus infection and the early stages of bronchitis. I'm attacking my ailments with codeine, amoxicillin, and sudafed.

I'm probably going to die.

Re: Irrational amp lust - Hovercraft?

Bumping this again... I am really fighting the GAS now.

I'm sitting here trying to think of justifications for another amp purchase.

Here's the deal: I have 4 heads already; really only one that I use regularly though. Two marshalls, two Mesas.

My main gigging amp - Mesa 5:50+ - does most of what I want. Love the cleans, plenty of volume, good channel balance, relatively simple. The overdive channel voicing does not have quite the crunch/thud/smoodge that I would like. It's great for leads but more like the orange channel on my dual recto (which is in semi-retirement for reasons that are too tedious to go into) - than the red channel, which is great but can sometimes sound a little sterile.

So here's my justiication:

A Hovercraft Falcon (or maybe some other amp I have not yet come across) might give me a 2 channel, 50 watt platform with Fender-ish cleans on one channel, and Orange-ish/Matamp-ish grunt and sludge for drop-tuned stoner riffs on the other, assuming it was voiced right. Leads might not be perfect but I can goose 'em with a tube-screamer or other slightly dirty boost to cut through when needed.

I wonder what the cleans are like on these amps. Good cleans are really, really important to me; my gold standard are vintage Fenders (like Princetons or maybe a Twin).

To be honest, I love my 5:50+ and I can get what I need from it; but a great alternate amp - especially an affordable one - that has a voice like I described; well that would be awesome.

Dude, read my post amp day post: "I probably should've done this sooner".

My new Dwarvenaut is an incredible marvel of amplification. Beautiful, round cleans with literally ant drive sound you can think of.

Last I checked, they had a Falcon in their FB/Ebay page. Go buy it if you need two channels. There is nothing out there that I've played that comes close to the quality that Nial puts out.

Re: Irrational amp lust - Hovercraft?

Wow. I was reading about the double-depth mod and the amp voicings that you posted above, it sounds really cool.
I feel like I need to get in the queue before this guy blows up and his wait times get insane...

By the way, how loud is that Dwarvenaut? My main band is loud enough that anything below 50 tube watts might not get there, but then again I know power ratings aren't always an accurate rep of stage volume...

We didn't crank it up past 9 o'lock yet. Its loud and has a massive low-end.

Re: Irrational amp lust - Hovercraft?

Also, the efficiency of your speakers is more important than wattage. Going from 20 to 50 watts is only like a 3db gain in perceived volume. If you have a good cab with efficient speakers youll6 be more than loud enough.

UGGGGHHH ****ING SHUT THE **** UP

I SAVED UP ENOUGH FOR A DWARVENAUT and then I saw this OR120 and I'm all "Oh **** I can make that happen it's only twice as much" and I mean I'm totally stoked because that amp is Hailsatan ****christ YeahIsaidit heavy but NO MASTER VOLUME IT HAS TO BE POUNDING THE DEPTHS OF MY HEART'S VAGINA TO GET DISTORTED which I totally love but I can't do as often as I want to SO NOW I HAVE TO BUY A ****ING DWARVENAUT AFTERALL.

Doomed World Problems. I used to make memes of myself. I should start doing that again.

Re: Irrational amp lust - Hovercraft?

lol
Twice the sound pressure is an SPL of +6 dB

only a couple decibels more and then your into hearing damage though since band practice is usually at about 110 dbA, and 90DBA for a few hours causes permanent hearing damage:

Dude, this amp is incredible. It even rips at low low low bedroom volume.

Trust me, I'm a medical professional.

Im gonna stay out of threads for a bit, yall are getting really serious

Re: Irrational amp lust - Hovercraft?

EVERDRONE I WILL FIGHT YOU WITH SWORDS

My Sunn model T has a warning label on the back that says "repeated exposure to high volume levels (more than 80 decibels) may cause permanent impairment of hearing." The Orange says it might kill you if you try to tamper with the insides. I love my amps.
