Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

I love the non-carved, unadorned body. If you know me, you know that "simple & clean" is my favorite phrase to describe an axe that I like.

Les Paul Studio (Black).jpg

Then again, we're talking Epiphone. If an EPI LP isn't "real", then the question is moot.

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

I'm not sure that "non-carved" is part of the definition of "Studio LP"... my own Studio LP has a carved top.

I thought Junior denoted slabs...

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

i'd consider a gibson les paul studio to be a real les paul. i would not consider the epi in the picture you have there to be a real les paul.

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

Does it have ' Les Paul' in script written on the headstock somewhere. That would tend to indicate it was a les paul.

I'm going by the pic. I'll have to check this out in the store. ;)

Yup. I get that. That's kinda my question.

Yes, it does. ::dunno:

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

There is a crossover now where there are some nice Epis and some really bottom of the barrel Gib Studios. The DMZ seems to occur somewhere in the $700 - $999 range. Starting from the midpoint in the DMZ and above I would say is a 'real' Les Paul. The $$ doesn't determine the 'real' part, it's the features, specs and quality that is available at those price points. And of course, there are still duds at every price point.

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

I think omitting the carved top and/or making the body substantially thinner is a compromise too many. It seems more like a melody maker with a tune-o-matic and a pick guard.

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

It says "Les Paul" right on the headstock, put there by the company that has the right to use the name. End of story.

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

Can you see it, touch it, smell it? It's real. But the real question what do you consider a "REAL" LP?

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

I think "worthy of the name Les Paul" is the inferred question.

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

Id say if it says LP and isnt one of the bottom line bolt ones, then it should be worthy of the Les Paul name..

I'm going with this.

But thanks all for reinforcing my GAS. ;)

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

It is ironic but I use my LP studio live and standard in the studio.

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

I have said this a hundred times, and I'll repeat it (because post count is everything);

A Les Paul Studio is everything you NEED in a Les Paul:
- Mahogany Body
- Maple Top
- Two Humbuckers
- Mahogany/Rosewood neck
- 2 vol, 2 tone

You can add Fancy, and you can pay more, but it sounds and plays the same. And yes - there is something about the aesthetic simplicity.

(by the way - that Epiphone is not what I'm talking about….I'm referring to Gibson. All Black Studios run 5-8 hunnerd on the bay)

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

I'd add set neck to that list. But yeah, as long as the guitar in question tickles your fancy just that right way, you're set.

Your definition of a Studio as a LP is on target.
Please realize that there is an exception. The picture shows Bernadette , my GEM Studio. It meets all of your requirements except for the pickups. It came with a pair of P-90's from Gibson.

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

I believe a flat-top LP that's not a Junior or a Melody Maker would be considered a Special, except in the case of Epis, where they can also be a '100'. There are Epi Studios, but I thought they were also carved-tops. I am the most un-guitar snob you'll probably ever meet, and in fact, I am the king of the cheapies. They are usually for some reason what I prefer. I also like cheap wine, but, I digress.. Anyway, I have both an Epi Special and a Gibson Special, as well as a Gibson Studio. I do not consider the Epi Special a Les Paul. I'm not even sure I consider the Gibson Special a Les Paul, though technically it is. I've got a couple of Epi Standard LPs, and I almost consider them more LPs than the Gibson Special. I don't know, I'm kind of on the fence when it comes to those 3.

But, I would be less concerned about whether or not it's 'really' a Les Paul than whether or not you like it. That's all that matters.

Sorry, I think the 100 is also a carved top, just a thinner body like a Junior.

AFAIK Studios whether Epi or Gibby have carve tops. I've owned and played a fair amount of both and I've yet to see a slab body Studio. Both the Epi and Gibby version are great guitars, imo. Gibbys are certainly nice but Epis are pretty sweet too. :)

If Aceman says so, then it is a real LP!
