Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

For a couple of years, as far as Gibson was concerned, the design that we now know as the SG was a real Les Paul.

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

Little known fact - Lester Polsfuss was also a nautical engineer, and what you have there is called the Les Paul Oar. :D

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

I'd also consider a singlecut Junior a LP, for the same reason......it has Les Paul on the headstock.

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

I would indeed include "arched top" as a feature. Flat top specials etc….do not count.

Les Paul on the Headstock? AhahahAHAHAhA :lmao: No. Not enough.

I will relax the ruling on the P-90's. Lot's of Les Pauls have P-90's.

Like my Gem series, for example….

Duncan Vintage b Neck and Custom n Bridge, I replaced the knobs w/ top hats, got a pick guard made, and swapped pup screws from the Gibson P-100's.

Your definition of a Studio as a LP is on target.
Please realize that there is an exception. The picture shows Bernadette , my GEM Studio. It meets all of your requirements except for the pickups. It came with a pair of P-90's from Gibson.

oh man - I so GAS for one of the Blueberry models!!! (Saphire - I know)

Those are awesome!

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

If you like it play it who cares what the headstock says

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

Yeah, I don't care what the headstock says. I'm more concerned with whether or not it has true LP feel and sound. For example, from what I've gathered in this forum, an LP-100 does not have the true LP feel. (Due to the bolt-on neck I presume.)

Anyway, I'm going to check one out this weekend.

For a couple of years, as far as Gibson was concerned, the design that we now know as the SG was a real Les Paul.

My luthier friend was telling me that story. Apparently, Gibson changed the shape of the LP to what we now know as the SG, in order to better compete with the Stratocaster. Les Paul himself, hated the design and demanded that they remove his name from it. Thus, the SG was born.

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

I have said this a hundred times, and I'll repeat it (because post count is everything);

A Les Paul Studio is everything you NEED in a Les Paul:
- Mahogany Body
- Maple Top
- Two Humbuckers
- Mahogany/Rosewood neck
- 2 vol, 2 tone

You can add Fancy, and you can pay more, but it sounds and plays the same. And yes - there is something about the aesthetic simplicity.

(by the way - that Epiphone is not what I'm talking about….I'm referring to Gibson. All Black Studios run 5-8 hunnerd on the bay)
What about the Custom?
No maple top - no mahogany fretboard.
Still, definitely a (and for some the) Lester.
As a side note, seems like I'm out of luck with my Studio... Swamp Ash body & top and ebony fretboard.
One of my fellow guitarists (by his own admission a Fender guy) made it sound like a Strat, just like he does with his own Lesters and his 335.
One other fellow guitarist (this one a Lester guy) made it sound like a Lester, just like he does with his own LPs.
I make it sound like crap, just like I do with any guitar I get to play.
This is real consistency.

I resemble that remark. :)

Btw, I was born near Pisa, in Calambrone.

Just want to point something out here , if you think those studios sound and play like my 81 custom you are out of your rabid minds. Not the same guitar no matter how much you want it to be.

Not EXACTLY the same. Binding on neck has a slightly different feel

Pickups may vary

Obviously Ebony has a slightly different feel and tone. Slightly

Minor issues. You can find Customs that are crap compared to a righteous studio, and Studios that sound / feel like crap compared to a custom. Mostly, they are all Les PAuls.

If you played a 1959 burst it also would sound and feel nothing like your 81 Custom, so your example is useless.

Army dad? Both my parents were employed in Camp Darby immediately after its inception, and over the years I've met some of their US colleagues (both military and civilian), many of them had children approx my age born in Calambrone or Livorno.
Drop me a line if you plan to come and see the ol' birthplace ;)

Yup. ;) If I ever get the chance, I may take you up on that.

Re: Is a Les Paul Studio a "real" Les Paul?

What about the LP recording and Professional models from the '70's like Les played in the later years? No carved top, no traditional humbucker or P-90 pickups, but I would venture to say they would more pure to Les' vision of what his signature model to be like.

Just a thought...

I've seen a couple of those in some YouTube videos. I'd love to be able to find one at a reasonable price. The wiring alone is right up my alley. ;)
