Is a LP junior the only electric guitar you ever really need?

Re: Is a LP junior the only electric guitar you ever really need?

Yeah, those slabs of mahogany just don't work for, say, Jazz. Oh wait.

Need? NEED? since when has guitar playing ever been about using only what you need. Its about excess! its about pure unadulterated sonic bliss for no other reason than I CAN!

Re: Is a LP junior the only electric guitar you ever really need?

A spoon wouldn't cut it but I'd be content with a spork.

No? It may be the only guitar you need, I need @ least 13, perhaps more....

My habit might be a bit extreme but you should probably at least have an crappy acoustic laying around to go with your JR. Remember LP JR's were student guitars and the originals were definitely something special but because they were student guitars that played & sounded almost as good as the LP's of the day & they were priced accordingly? There were a few punk guys using them in the 70's but they really became popular again in the 90's because they just seemed to fit into that grunge box so well, reissues incoming!!! I.M.H.O. the reissues are essentially $150 guitars with $600 logos on them...

I bought one & tried it, sucks, exchanged it, sucks, exchanged it, sucks, exchanged it, still really sucks, give me a Fender!!!!!

Here's mine.

And here's the thread including photos of it being built.

Re: Is a LP junior the only electric guitar you ever really need?

I asked, because I'm around half a dozen or so guitars in now & they're not going anywhere soon, but I got thinking if I had to start from scratch again what would be the bare minimum I could effectively get away.
I understand some of the more esoteric tones would be unavailable but I reckon I could have a 15-20 watt amp w/reverb, a half decent acoustic (mid level yamaha/takamine type thing) & a gibson junior & I'd have everything I'd ever 'need' for practice, rehearsing gigging & recording, (wanting is a different matter.)
So I'd lose the neck pickup but I can get a good approximation by rolling all the treble off & playing with my right hand as far from the bridge as I can get away with.

I understand the trickle down effect, in a nutshell if you let the 1 in 10,000 billionaire be grossly rich, his extravagant lifestyle & purchases will create an industry & economy to support the other 9,999, however unless he(or she) buys 10,000 cars, TV's, fridges, dishwashers etc it's not really gonna work out is it? Maybe I'm being a little slow but I didn't get the trickle down guitar playing joke/comment & still don't but I guess if someone explains it in simple language to me the rhetoric will be lost on me :-).

I get the 'strat is the only guitar you need' narrative too, but I think you can go even simpler & go with a LP (or SG) junior

OMG no. I won't own any one PU guitar. There's too many tone possibilities you give up.
I'll use a one pickup guitar, and I do agree with you, but Leslie West would disagree with you with this statement.....lol

“I never felt like I needed a two- or three-pickup guitar, because you can get a lot of tones out of a single pickup. If you’re in a room filled with gasoline, how many matches do you really need? One good one and a backup!”

This is actually a pretty interesting quick little read. It's a trip how he ended up with his Mountain tone that we all know.

I'd never heard of Leslie West or Mountain till now, are they worth checking out?

Is he the inspiration for those mississipi queen pickups available erm elsewhere?

As far as I know he's the inspiration for those pickups. I would think so.

Leslie did some pretty tasty stuff back in the day. But there's thousands of players that have made good use of their double PU guitars, so it's nowhere near a close contest.

Re: Is a LP junior the only electric guitar you ever really need?

Leslie's all about that Les Paul Junior and it's tone knob.
