Is a speaker without a cone an attenuator?

I guess things are never that simple but... They could be!!

I was thinking in the possibility of ussing a leftover speaker i have to do this. Removing the cone of the speaker I still would have the coil but but I don't have the remote idea it this it si going to work.

Any suggestion?

I don´t think it would work. The speakers cone is fastened to the rim by a "rubbery" flange that allows the speaker to move back and forth. But more importantly , the cone and flange keep the voice coil in place near the magnet

In theory, the voice coil might come flying out (if a DC voltage is applied it "should")......

It would work...at least sort of. The Weber Mass is a power attenuator with a speaker coil inside the box but no cone. I have one...works pretty good! Lew

I think the Weber's are specially cast to work that way. If you just cut the cone off there'd be no suspension to keep the voice coil from contacting the driver assembly and arching....which would normally be known as a blown speaker, but I don't know what you'd call it in this case.
