Carlos Santana and John Petrucci use Mesas... are they sell-outs?

:wall: Carlos Santana played with Everlast on a record, you tell me. :blackeye:

BTW, I own a V-Twin and am planning on getting a Maverick. I'm not a sell out....

Yet. :laugh2: :blackeye:

I'd suggest you actually demo the amps you are thinking about buying. Then buy the one that gives you the tones you like within your budget irregardless of what pros endorse given product. But try to buy the best amp you can.

Re: Is buying a mesa selling out?

not all mesas sound like the rectos...in fact, not all rectos sound alike..my blue angel says dual recto on it, but sounds nothing like what youd expect from most mesas.

Bottom line is... If you can play good? Your not selling out !

Now I don't think that buying a particular amp brand is selling out, but your last statement could very well be one of the most ignorant ones I've heard today... and today wasn't a very intelligent day for grade 11 at school (I'm in computer class right now :newangel: ). How does playing the guitar well not make you a "sell-out"? I believe if you follow the trends that everyone else is following, or playing what EVERYONE else is playing, then you become a sell-out, regardless of your playing skill. And as a friend of mine just said, it all depends on WHY you play what you do. Because everyone else plays it and you want to be doing what everyone else is doing? That's selling out! It's hard to describe. But you understand what I'm saying; I hope I haven't just made an ass of myself :32:

Don't worry about what the gear is, worry about what it sounds like and how it holds together.

Trends pass. I own a PRS CU22, and I guess to some kids that reads 'nu-metal guitar', but I remember when PRS were endorsed by has-been rockers (I say that fondly) like Nuge, Whitford, Santana. Nu-metal will die, and PRS will still be considered a great guitar. Of course, there is a bonus: in about 15-20 years, all those nu-metal kids that couldn't afford a PRS will be pushing 'vintage' PRS prices up as they snap up their 'teenage dream' instrument.

I used to own a mesa blue angel head, and that was a GREAT amp, one I'll probably own again some day. And it was rock solid for two years of gigging. I have no hesitations about recommending mesa to anyone, despite only liking a couple of models personally.

"Fenders are for cars" as Leslie West said. Nah, I like Fender and Rectos and whatever else is out there. If it Rocks you, go for it. It might just make you go in new directions or confirm that you were on the right path. I don't think a Mesa will lose much value, so you can alwasy get most of your money back. Just don't sell what you currently love, unless you have to, to try out the new one. If your in a rut, try something new.

Re: Is buying a mesa selling out?

First off, thanks for all the replies guys. It's not so much that I'm worried about people thinking im a sell out. It's just that I've always wanted to things differently (play different guitars and amps), and I just don't want myself to think I'm a sell out.

I actually went to GC the other day and played a few mesas. I must say I was impressed. Some of them are a little confusing with all the different controls and such, but overall I liked them. One that stuck out was called a mkllb (I think.) It had volume, bass, treble, master vol, lead, and gain knobs, and maybe four of them were push/pull. It was a 1x12 too. I'm trying to stay away from anything bigger; after that it just gests to damn heavy!!

What are some of your favorite mesas?

The Blue Angel has come up a lot on this thread alone, so that should say something. The Mark IV seems to be the best of the old school Boogie tone, as well as having great modern metal sounds. I don't have a lot of experience with them, but the single rectifier recto-verb seems to be the sweetest sounding of the recto series. Also the Subways are really cool.

BTW I had a MK III 1x12 that weighed as much as a 4x12 cab, So always carry a mesa before purchase, if weight is an issue, their small size can be deceiving.

I haven't played any other rectos, but I must say the Rectoverb IS a sweet amp ;). If weight is an issue, you might consider going with a head/cab. The two different units might be nicer portability-wise.
