Is it possible to effectively simulate a quad box with two 2x12"s?

Or do you need four speakers in the same box to acheive THAT 4x12 sound?

Just a random thought. I always thought it would be practical to have the portability of just one 2x12 and when called for be able to add another 2x12 on top. Plus I would never be able to fit a 4x12 in my car, unless I took the backseat out maybe ha ha.

The 2-12's that sound the best are the larger ones with more space above the speakers, and definitely closed back. Those tend to have better bass than the smaller 2-12's.

Earcandy Buzzbomb. Got one, sold my 4X12. Same speakers in both cabs (V12/G12H30s) and I could not hear the difference. In fact the Buzzbomb had a bit more bass response! This was an Avatar 4X12 by the way. I got the Buzzbomb for my Vox Valvetronix, but it sounded so good with my tube amps I got rid of the Avatar mainly because of the reason you stated--half the size. Check out the website and the reviews. Then check ebay and see if you find any--99% chance you will not. They're too good to sell, lol.

My new Camry will not fit my 4x12's anymore so i am looking at 2x12's myself.... I have a Marshall 1x12 cab for now.... I find with my 1x12 i'm pumping the bass up more then with the larger cabs

Re: Is it possible to effectively simulate a quad box with two 2x12"s?

I have a toyota corrolla, so the 4x12 is out of the picture for me too.

good to have the 2x12 option, they won't ever sound like the 4x12 but still sound damn good...I doubt if anyone here has stacked 2 of em on top of each other and compared the difference but each is good for their own reasons...

I was gassin' for an earcandy buzzbomb a few months ago when I started reading about how awesome they sound but it would cost a damn pretty penny to import one from the States to Australia.

The Achillies cabinet I posted pictures of above is made by one man in my local area who's craftmenship is supposedly second to none. The people who own these cabinets give glowing reviews very much similar to what I've read from Buzzbomb cab reviews. When I have the money, I'm probably going to be getting an Achillies Priam 2x12".

Thanks for all the responses guys but none of you have actually answered my original question! LOL!

I would definitely like the portablility of 2 2x12 compared to just 1 4x12. If your using two 2x12s the bass will be lower, volume-wise they should be similar. I don't really care about bass much because a guitar's purpose is to fill in the mids in a band.

Re: Is it possible to effectively simulate a quad box with two 2x12"s?

reason that the buzzbomb has a fatter bottom end.

the two port holes on the front ;)

close em and you lose all the bass it's pumpin out

Re: Is it possible to effectively simulate a quad box with two 2x12"s?

With the exception of the really wealthy bands, I have rarely seen more than 2 speakers in a 412 mic'd for the pa... That being said, I spent some time at several boutique stores in Atlanta shopping with a friend who was int he market for a 212 to complement his Germino Lead 55 Head... Some of the 212's sounded FULLER than the 412's we tested with them... No joke, the response seemed tighter, and the volume end was articulate, but seemed lower... The salesman claimed the models he tested were tuned during design to provide a bandpass-like effect... The box was tuned where the natural resonant frequency of the amp and speakers crossed on the tone generator. I built mobile audio systems using these same appoaches, and could see a use for them in this arena as well... The cab DID have ports hiding behind the speaker cloth, so I guess there's some merit to it... I goes to show you get what you pay for when buying boutique gear... Although, the salesman coulda been blowing smoke, I never followed up on it...

Case in point, Nate decided on a particular model that was in the store and found the sweet spot on his 212 cab for micing purposes with one mic and it sounded VERY full!!

Re: Is it possible to effectively simulate a quad box with two 2x12"s?

port holes are THE way for a fuller bass. they dont realy take away any tightness .. i'll go out on a limb and say at higher volumes, they add to it.

i'd like to see if they have any special interior design

Re: Is it possible to effectively simulate a quad box with two 2x12"s?

I use Marshall 1965 & 1966 cabs....they measure 24" x 24" x12". They look just like a 4x12 that was shrunken down :D

The 1965A & B are 4x10 cabs....the 1966A & B are 2x12 cabs.

I've run the 1966A & 1965B (2x12 top/4x10 bottom) together, 2x12 closed back/4x10 open...sounds HUGE!!!

Right now, I'm running my Fuchs with the 4x10 top closed back/4x10 bottom open.

Again, it sounds GIGANTIC...esp. for a 20watter :bigok:

They do. The Earcandy 2x12 has the same internal volume as a 4x12.

I had a silverface Bandmaster cab that I used with my JTM 45 RI back in they day and it worked VERY well.

Cheers. Not really is good enough for me. :amish:

Re: Is it possible to effectively simulate a quad box with two 2x12"s?

I think you can get close enough with two...but it's not the same.

There's alot of resonance going on in a 4 x 12. The four speakers cause each other to resonate and that fattens up the tone alot!

If you have a sealed cabinet with four speakers in it and only have one speaker connected to your amp all four speakers will still put out some sound because the one speaker that is hooked up will cause the other three to resonate as "passive radiators".
