Is Jimmy Page the most overrated guitarist?

Re: Is Jimmy Page the most overrated guitarist?

Him and Iommi are the two greatest riff writers in guitar music history. He inspires millions of people to learn how to play guitar. His solos, like a lot of other things Led Zeppelin are tweaked and revised versions of preexisting material, and he is not as technically proficient as a lot of other guitarists. So, overrated? I guess it depends on how you “rate” guitarists, period. He’s definitely one of my top 5 favorite players.

Page isn’t even what I love most about the band.... it’s that frickin’ rhythm section. John Paul Jones and Bohnam were the sh!t. Probably my favorite bass playing of all time is what JPJ does in the Lemon Song.
That song is beyond words for me. So good!

Re: Is Jimmy Page the most overrated guitarist?

The sheer versatility of his song writing is pretty amazing too .I mean they never put out two similar albums and even the songs on those were so different fro each other. He was always exploring new stuff, something other guitar players of the time did'nt really do much at all..I mean they'd all do the odd "different" track, but that's not the same thing.

Going from The rain song, to Kashmir to Stairway, to No Quarter ..Gallow's pole..the Lemon Song ..Black Dog etc..that's versatility.

As far as his playing goes..I think he was a phenomenal player & totally deserves all his accolades & fame. He wrote a bunch of memorable solo's that will never leave my mind. Whether or not he was sloppy live, I could'nt care less...I actually love that about him. His solo's always had my attention & I've always thoroughly enjoyed his live improvisation ..all 20 minutes of it lol ..sloppy or not, it was awesome. The fact that he got wasted & could'nt give a **** with 100,000 people in front of him just adds to his Rock star/larger than life image. It's Rock n'Roll ..not math or rocket science. Don't be a bunch of dork's ;)

Why are you surprised? With 12-year old girl ripping thorugh 'Far Beyond the Sun' on You Tube, even Steve Vai is overrated.

Re: Is Jimmy Page the most overrated guitarist?

These days, I love Physical Graffiti and III. Both aren't filled to the top with overplayed songs on classic rock radio (and as a Led Zep fan, if I never hear II or IV again in my life, I will be just fine). Both have amazing production, and both are creative peaks to me.

Re: Is Jimmy Page the most overrated guitarist?

Why don't you post some clips of that sloppy playing you speak of?

Like the song Hot Dog? lol

I love Page, but he is known as “old fumble fingers.” But he was also using smack.

The important aspect of Page is he’s very creative. He invented a lot of the things every rock guitarist plays.

To me being sloppy in general is different from being sloppy while using. I wanted to figure out if the OP just didn’t like him or it was the latter. I’ve just seen him live once and he did great.

I'd put Malcolm Young and Blackmore above them, but in top 5... Surely.

Re: Is Jimmy Page the most overrated guitarist?

Gentlemen before we get too fired up over this topic may I mention one thing? I was alive during the Led Zep period, and I've seen Page play live. For many of you this music was before your time, and it's hard to relate to a different time, a time without the internet, and when rock stars didn't have reality TV shows. We never saw the prince of freaking darkness on his sofa trying and failing to figure out the Direct TV remote.
In those days these guys had an aura, and were seen as mythical beings. To see them only in retrospect in today's world, one doesn't get the entire experience.

Having been there I can say this: Over rated? Perhaps. However a guy that calls himself "The edge" is the all-time king of over rated. He has no peers. I'll take Page with the violin bow over anything Mr. Edge has ever played.

Good point, The edge is overrated AF.
I literally played m something that sounded very u2 by accident while dialling in delay patches

Hmm... The Edge is overrated? I'd be interested in hearing your reasoning behind that.

I know you’re a u2 fan but to me it lacks depth and it’s something that literally was done via a delay pedal and playing the same sequence of chords ad nauseam for the majority of the time.
The edge is praised as an innovator but for me he didn’t push the boundaries of playing in the same way Hendrix or Page did.
The edge is a good player and he did some cool stuff but nothing groundbreaking or worthy of the praise he gets.

Re: Is Jimmy Page the most overrated guitarist?

All of them have incredibly musical ability, Yngwie is literally classical played on electric for the most part.
Satriani while not my thing is a good rock n roll guitarist with great bluesy chops as well as lead playing that’s incredibly proficient
Vai is god, nuff said.

Quite true for me. When I came of age (before YouTube, yet long after they were in their heyday) it was at a time when I'd heard more about Jimmy Page being the originator of metal etc. without ever having heard a lick of him playing. When I finally picked up an album, my reaction was sort of like... "Wait... Really? It's seriously just the freaking blues?" Nothing that was at all metal-tinged to my ears at the time. I do like a good several Led Zeppelin songs now but I agree that I am very far from the original context of the music and probably can't appreciate it in the same way that it was heard back in the day. In fact- the original context of that era is lost in so much distortion at this point that it's probably impossible.

To me, Led Zeppelin is just some bluesy rock that I don't really seek out (except maybe a few songs like 'In the Light') but won't turn off or complain about in a restaurant either. It's not obsolete, but it can't compete with things that originally caught my interest about rock music.

And again repeating, I do not like his tone. Others of the era got a lot closer to awesome in that particular area, IMO.

To be fair, while the whole delay thing is his signature sound, it's not his only sound. He can write a memorable overdriven riff such as Vertigo or my personal favorite, Desire. He's praised for having his own distinct sound, simple as it maybe. I could tell you it was him playing almost instantly even he turned off his pedalboard.
