I read that it seem to be a jack of all trades pickup, even though it can get into early metal territory better than a regular 59, it can still do AC/DC type chords pretty well
Is the 59/custom hybrid brighter or darker than the regular SH-1 59?

It hits the ear as "darker" right away due to the massive increase in low mids. It also has a chewier feel, by far. But the signal actually does not contain any less treble information - as Doc said, it's just much more balanced towards the midrange.

If you're looking for something heavy and tight, stepping up to the Custom 5 might be what you're wanting to hear, but the C/59 does have a nice output, texture, and growl that makes it a very good pickup in the Duncan lineup.
One thing I always liked about the 59 is it's sustain and ability to sound beautiful with cleans, mid gain, and high gain. But it does have that 'almost there' type of output.
I kind of think of the C/59 as Van Halen, and the Custom 5 as Alex Lifeson, as a sort of tonal reference.

The mids are more scooped in the '59 and the '59/Custom doesn't have the "crushed glass treble" of the '59 when overdriven. The highs are rounded off and you get a browner sound with the '59/Custom hybrid.
Those scooped mids in the '59 are accompanied by some serious first and second octave bass frequencies.
Although the '59/Custom hybrid may be more full in the midrange especially the lower mids, it doesn't have the deep bass frequencies of the '59 (some people describe it as boomy bass).
So yeah, I guess that would make the bass "tighter" and easier to manage. The custom coil is a magical pairing for the '59 coil IMHO.
