Is the duncan custom hotter than the JB?

Re: Is the duncan custom hotter than the JB?

Unless the lead was really short or something. Just take the screws out of the mounting ring and flip it over. If it's an older pickup it might have a three letter code instead of the SH-X labelling. We can tell you what it is if that's the case.

I'm gonna echo other posters by saying a Distortion is definitely the pickup you want. With a loose amp like a Recto the JB is more than likely gonna end up being worse than the Custom for chugga-chuggas. Especially since it's going in a Les Paul. The Distortion is just perfect for early Metallica tones.

Re: Is the duncan custom hotter than the JB?

I understand about it being better with a boosted amp, but my feelings are that if I could get what I needed from stock gibson pickups, I shouldn't have to boost my amp to get a desired sound from my duncans.

The custom gets as dirty as I need it to for the most part, but when it comes to trills on the low E string I feel like it just doesn't cut through

Like the verse on this song

that fast galloping rhythm doesn't cut through on the duncan custom, it gets kinda flubby. Everything else is great on it. Can anyone tell me what about the JB makes it less than desired on a les paul?

To me, a recto (or a stiletto) is unusable without an OD808 in front. That's because the amp's sluggish response totally kills the feel in my picking hand, slows it down as if I were stirring a pot of tar.
I think a les paul through a recto makes the polar opposite of tight... does a blunt thump kind of attack rather than whiplash. It just won't want to gallop, it's a manatee not a racing horse. Don't ponder "to boost or not to boost" like a question of life & death; you want to kill the flub, so just step on it.

The JB... can get loose and lack definition in the wrong guitar. It was a muddy mess in my Gunslinger, pretty lackluster in an ESP Eclipse, too. In the Jackson, it is pretty amazing. A guitar with a tight, snappy response works best for the JB, in my experience. Most les pauls don't do that, but remember, sometimes wood doesn't want to behave according to common descriptions.

Re: Is the duncan custom hotter than the JB?

go distortion!

im 99% sure Joe from Gojira uses a JB.

He has awesome tone, but he is also playing a 6505 and a evh 5150 iii on their last album

if you do get a JB make it a JB8

Re: Is the duncan custom hotter than the JB?

I've said it before, LP + DD = big fat titties.

lol! post-of-the-day award.

anyway, I think I'd focus more on the tone you want and if you need more or less output, go walk over to the amp and mess with the knobs on the front. either way, I think you're good with the JB.

Re: Is the duncan custom hotter than the JB?

I would go with a Distortion for what you want. If you do a whole lot of lead work though and need to stand out I would go with the JB then.

Re: Is the duncan custom hotter than the JB?

Have you tried messing with the height of the Custom? A lot of times I find that if a pickup is close to what you want it to be that you just have to find the sweet spot where it'll do everything. How far off the strings would you say you have it set?

Re: Is the duncan custom hotter than the JB?

Also another option that is a lot cheaper then buying a whole new pup is Swapping the magnet inside but that can only do so much. But the Custom is a top notch pup for metal and I think you really need to adjust the pup height a bit like GilmourD said.

Yeah I wish it were that simple. I raised the pickup pretty high, it just doesn't do that chugga chugga kind of stuff. Great tone but I can't get it to do the fast chug stuff. I just ordered a Duncan distortion from sweet water. I also installed a pick guard bc my custom that had the right sound had a pick guard (that's a joke...except I did add a pick guard), pics to come

Odd... A Custom should definitely give you a good chug.

Yeah, I gave up. It shouldn't require an OD to chug, and I know how to work my amp bc I can get the sounds I want from other passive and active pickups and have had to adjust my EQ according to different pickups.

Re: Is the duncan custom hotter than the JB?

Mail your rig over to me. I'll test it out. :-D

In all seriousness, that's a gorgeous Les Paul. Makes me want one, but I need another guitar like I need another hole in my head... And my wife would crack my arse the other way.

Re: Is the duncan custom hotter than the JB?

Thanks man, I appreciate it! I actually just for it a week go. It replaced my custom that I sold last year. I was playing an EC-1000 until this bad boy showed up.

I wish I still had the EC bc I would love to have the Duncan custom in a different guitar, just not my #1.
I would like to pickup one of those faded/brown SGs (they go for like 400 so it's not too big a deal) and throw this pick up in it.

Ok this is a PERFECT example

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFzskrO_BEA

when this guy is doing the palm muted open E string stuff. It's like on the bring of saturation, not exactly cutting through. I keep fighting to make it cut through. I did it effortlessly with EMGs and with STOCK gibson pickups. If gibbo stockers can do it there's no reason why the custom can't, except that it's not built to do so.

Re: Is the duncan custom hotter than the JB?

You want a Distortion. It's you. It's the sound you crave.

I see your issue clearly now. As I have said, the Custom bass and highs. It's what you need for chug and THUMP. Distortion, miss and highs, it's what you need for chug and CRUNCH.

And yes - you can do metal, all kinds, with a JB. 80's hair is just a sig sound for it in that role. But yes Megadeth has them all over.

thanks man. I went ahead and ordered the SD distortion yesterday, I expect it sometime next week!
