Is the Invader crap?

I put an Invader in my Epiphone Korina Explorer 2 weeks ago and I still can't get used to it. It lacks sustain and it sounds muddy unless I use a stomp box. I've checked my connections and it's installed correctly. Is it my guitar, POD, or the pickup? Help. :yell:

I'll tell you this...I have noticed that a POD is a bit of the fat side, and an Invader is too...plus most gibson guitars are bottom heavy...that's a lot of bottom end going on there...

Agreed. The original POD is kind of dark and muddy sounding with dark pickups. I like bright pickups with the POD.

Re: Is the Invader crap?

Do you think I should switch to a Dimarzio Super Dist. or go back to the Screamin' Demon (which I loved). Thing is, I don't want my guitars to all sound the same. My other guitar is a vintage Ibanez Iceman with the original Super 80 pups, and it sounds killer, it's got that classic Les Paul sound, just a tad hotter.

Re: Is the Invader crap?

checked the height you've got the pup set at? keep in mind invaders are real hot

what overall tonality does korina give you? on a slight tangent, do you like the epi explorer?

Re: Is the Invader crap?

Yeah, the Epi Explorer is cool little guitar. I'd always wanted an Ibanez Korina Destroyer like EVH, but I could never find one for sale and when I did it was too expensive, so when i found this Epi the price was right and it sounded great (before I changed the bridge pup). The guy I bought it from installed a real Gibson HB, but I wanted something hotter.

Try this...put the Demon back in the guitar BUT replace the allen screws with standars flat head screws and see how you like that!

Re: Is the Invader crap?

I am more or less against putting an Invader in a guitar with a 24.75 scale. Usually those guitars are made with Mahongany or something like it so with the invader you are almost asking for a dark and muddy sound with those wood types and that scale. I would go and try a Dimarzio super Distortion. I have always been a fan of that pickup.

Re: Is the Invader crap?

Try a "Duncan Custom" with that POD.....The Screamin' Demon & the Duncan Custom are the two best SD p/ups I've ever heard through a POD. The high output p/ups muddy it up & the lower output one sound great in some stuff but kinda squishy on others. I think the sound you want would come from the Duncan Custom.....worth a listen. It made a really crappy guitar of mine sound great.

close...but there is a good difference

Confirm/Deny: Korina is brighter than mahogany.

This is what I've heard...

Re: Is the Invader crap?

If I remember correctly it is a tad brighter than mahogany.

Re: Is the Invader crap?

Answering the original question, Yes! The Invader is total crap. It's so crappy in fact, I'll do you a favor, and take yours off your hands for you :)

It is a tad brighter but it also has a better bottom...here is the deal, and I know Im about to step on ALOT of toes...All the Epiphone explorers and V are bleached Mahogany that is then stained to look like Korina or white Limba...I have a 1983 Moderne that is real limba wood and the tonal difference is night and day...I hate to sound like a snob but trust me on this... Look at this..."Korina" is Gibsons trade name for the FINISH, not the wood...Gibson will tell you all day long that the Epi stuff is Korina and they are right it is the same honey colour that The Gibsons are made out of...not once will Gibson/Epiphone tell you that the Epi Explorers and V and the Epi Moderne are Limba...because it would be a lie...So to answer your question mrid...LIMBA is a tad brighter than mahogany and has a stronger bass responce...Korina is a pretty finish.

I could listen to you talk all day... :laugh2: Thanks for the wealth of info!

Well, I had an early 80's Gibson reissue Korina V years ago, and it was essentially the antithesis of my '80 mahogany V (Gibson's 2nd reissue series-- think Schenker :) ). The Korina (Limba) was more percussive (the bass response you mentioned), but not very smooth and exhibited less warmth than the mahogany V, but still pretty "woody". Very light, and I did place an Invader in the bridge-- it helped drive the amp better, but the wood dictated the overall character. Not much sustain. Not a great guitar. One of the F series-- pretty shoddy construction. It would have been better I believe with 11's, and the stock pickups would have worked for a nice blues sound rather than rock.

Re: Is the Invader crap?

Oh, and Invaders are not my first choice for mahogany, maple, or walnut-- harsh and muddy. Good in Limba and alder.

Re: Is the Invader crap?

I had an 85 V XPL & is was just a piece of crap all the way around. I have a buddy that bought a Faded Flying V w/a busted headstock for 50.00 , fixed it & it sounds & plays great....blew away that 750.00 "vintage junk" V that I had....ewwww , like a cat scratchin' my eardrums. Freakin' Norlin.

I have an old superdistortion in my epiphone "korina" explorer and it sounds awesome. When I go to play hard rock, sludge, grunge, or anything heavy, this is the guitar I pick up.
