Is the JB good for power chords?

Yeah, I was wondering if you get a good crunchy tone for powerchords with a JB? Say if I wanted to play a song like "Iron Man" ? I know it's probably not gonna sound as doomy as Iommi's tone, but will it be fine? I know it's subjective, but somebody must have some experiences.

I'd say. If you're lookin for crunch, the JB has it in spades.

It will have definition, if that is what you are looking for.

If you are looking for that dirty Sabbath type of drippy distortion. Nope.

I play prog hard rock/metal, and in my Ernie ball music man, it can get heavy as hell. Just make sure you got a good amp/distortion setup. On the right setup the JB can sound like heaven and hell, on the wrong setup it can just sound like hell. To my ears, it perfectly compliments my krank.

For power chords, I think the JB is lacking. I like it for stuff on the G,B,E, strings but, I think the E,A,D, are the pits!!!! So much so that its my most hated pickup! The G,B,E strings have it goin on though!

it would be harder to get there with the JB than say the Invader.

Of course, alot has to do with what else is in your signal chain.

You could stick the JB in a mahogany SG and run it through a GH100TI and get close.

I just think it would require about a cord of mahogany to get there with that pickup.

But, if you are seeking your own individual tone, go for it. You never know until you try.

EDIT: People don't discover new sounds by listening to the drivel of others either. Trust your own ears. Experiment.

The JB is awesome for power chords. Look at all the guitarists over the years that have used it for power chord style rock and metal.

The JB is great for power chords...it's a great pickup that totally grinds. Don't listen to Odie (well, listen to him everytime BUT right now)- IMO, the JB is great on the low strings. I accually think it cn be a tad too trebbley in certain setup on the unwound strings. Expect intense harmonics and biting gain.

The jb is great for metal, especially prog/tecnical metal. It's got great crunch and is tight for blazing leads. At practice last night I was thinking, F***k I love the sound of this mahagony guitar/(JB/Jazz) through my Mesa. I guess I was having a great sound moment. :kabong:

If you like the sound, go for it, just make sure you have a good distortion tone to make it sound decent

I think the JB is one of the better pickups for power chords.

Well, people say it's good with a mahogany guitar, and that's exactly what I'm getting.. Mahogany w. maple top, maple neck, ebony fretboard... Thanks for your answers.

It sounds wonderful in mine. You'll have to adjust the height a bit differently than you would on a mahogany guitar, but you can make it sound great. Then again, it's way too bright through Luke Duke's amp.

Id realy love to know how Jerry Cantrell didint have treble off the wall with the JB in the G&L renegade.... I could understand on facelift but dirt and AIC had much thicker and ballsier tone.
