is there a big diff between a Phat Cat bridge vs. neck?

Been looking to get a used Phat Cat bridge, but a neck version popped up for a decent price.

Is there a huge difference in tone/output between these two if I decide to put the neck version in the bridge position?

As typical with nearly all pups, there is a slight increase in output in the bridge model. Phat Cat neck is about 8k and bridge is about 8.5k. If you put a neck model in the bridge you may notice a slightly lower output to a neck model in the neck, but not very noticeable if you have something else in the neck.

The main thing that you may notice is that the neck model will sound a little "lighter" than the bridge model. This is actually not a bad thing, since Phat Cats tend to sound a bit darker than many would prefer. Some PC owners even swap in A5, UOA5, A4 mags to brighten them up (they come with 2 A2 mags).

Not a problem. The neck model is actually a little hot for the neck slot (Zhang says it's about 1K too hot). Between the overwinding and A2 mags, it's usually pretty dark, especially in mahogany and 335's.

Oddly enough, the bridge model itself sounds 'weak and thin' (Zhang quote) in the bridge slot. I use these magnet pairs to add body and output to my bridge PC's and P-90's: A8/A5, A8/A4, RC A4/RC A4, and UOA5/UOA5. Much better tones.

The problem many of us have with Phat Cats is the A2 mags, which seem poorly suited for neck or bridge. You may want to swap them, as I have on all of mine. With stonger magnets, you'll get the output you need from your neck PC, even in the bridge slot.

i very much like the pc bridge with the stock magnets. the neck on the other hand seems wound too hot for its position

Yeah I'd probably switch the magnets up eventually anyway. The A8/A4 seems like it'd be good, as would A8/A5. Or A2/A5 if I wanted to clear it up a bit without bumping output too much.

Heh, I've got an Epi with a bridge model Phat Cat in the neck position. Sounds great, you gotta make sure it's low, but there are some really nice tones to be had.

I just really like Phat Cats though, so you know. I'm biased.
