Is there such a thing as a transposition pedal?

OK. I was on last week asking about electronic tuners so I could do the Eb thang with my band. Well, we sort of decided to only do Eb on certian songs and standard tuning on the rest. I have a guitar that I could dedicate to Eb so that isn't too much of a problem but I was wondering if there was such a thing as a pedal that would transpose a standard tuning into a flat tuning. It would be great to be able to use the tuner I have and be able to use any guitar I wanted to play any song we had it I could just kick a stompbox and trick my amp into thinking I was tuned a half-step down.

Maybe such technology does not yet exist. Maybe I am chasing after an unattainable dream. Maybe I should just shut up and let y'all talk.

Rock on.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can do this with those Roland MIDI pickups.

Yep...Joni Mitchell used one of those guitars. She has a jillion differant tunings and can get them all from one guitar: without retuning! Lew

yeah those roland GK pickups do do it, but you have to have either a Roland VGA combo or Roland multi FX too. It works out pretty expensive, but it would work great. if your into the whole digital malarkey.

Capo.

Tune to Eb and capo the first fret (definatly not the best solution, but I have done it before to play a D-standard guitar in tune with an E-Standard one)

I think most detune effects are meant to sound more like a depressed whammy bar and likely wouldn't work well as a transposer, but I don't have alot of experiance with pitch shifting so maybe someone else could give a better answer.

The technology has arrived in the shape of the Variax 700. Alright it is an acoustic version of the Variax 500 but it won't be long before they put something out.

So what does the Variax 700 do? Well aside from giving you all the different acoustic models it will also give you instant access to altered tunings. In other words you preset and customise the different altered tunings but instead of tuning them or learning different positions to play you would use normal positions but still get the sounds that you want. Does this make sense?

I have not played them but someone here must have tried them? See their site.

Jimmy Page also had some special LPs that were adapted for him that would do something similar and I think the guy who did them is still in business but I cannot remeber who he is? It will come memory just takes time to get into full flow!!

Sounds like we have all come up with the next millions dollar idea: A stompbox that allows you to transpose down a step while playing in standard tuning. Let's get to work on it and we can share in the profits. I think that it should be a green pedal. Now someone else come up with the wires and chips and junk on the inside that makes it RAWK.

Continue to rock.

My Boss ME30 has a "Pitch Shifter" which allows you to shift pitch through 12 different increments above or below the standard setting. It sort of does the same thing you describe. However, it has a touch of delay to it that almost makes it ineffective for quick runs.
