Stevie Ray's guitar had a nitro finish from back in the early 1960's while the OP's finish on his guitar is probably polyurethane. Poly doesn't wear as well as nitro does which explains the difference between the two.

Yeah, I get that. But correct me if I'm wrong but higher end guitars are usually (or often) stained or dyed, yes? The dye or stain penetrates the wood. If one of those guitars are finished with poly (or nitro), and the poly wore or chipped, the wood would still show the staining or dye. Would it not?
Actually, the body's finish is polyester.
I have sanded down maybe 5 guitars now that all had cracks around the heel. guess how many weren't cosmetic? Theres more chance of a break along a glue join..
I'm yet to even see one picture of a heel crack that has broken off completely. I could google that.
Heel cracks into the wood running with the grain are not isolated incidents. They are fairly commonplace in the big assembly guitar market..
