Is this brand new EMG pickup broken?

Hey there, so i got a simple question: In your experience with pickups, is this EMG pickup broken? I just ordered it brand new, it's an EMG-81X, and i was inspecting it yesterday to perhaps try and install it myself, and saw this "smash"/depression (don't know the right word for it) in the bottom.

It has no finishing damage though, but i'm still worried since the bottom is so stiff, i am worried it has been damaged in the preamp or something.

I already contacted EMG and the seller, but they will probably only answer on Monday. Thought i came here to perhaps get a diagnosis sooner, 'cause perhaps some may have seen it before.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum

EMG pickups are epoxy sealed and it shrinks a bit when cured. Plug it and it should work just fine.

Re: Is this brand new EMG pickup broken?

Thanks! But have you seen other EMG's like that, that were working properly? It seems like a pretty deep shrink.

Re: Is this brand new EMG pickup broken?

Plug it in in place of another EMG, quick connect makes it a 2 minute task

Probably all good, there's a crapton of epoxy on EMGs... also, EMG has never bothered making perfect finishes on the epoxied baseplate bottoms, theyre usually uneven

I wish i could; My guitar that has another EMG is a Fernandes with a faulty Fernandes Sustainer that's screwing the guitar. (Output of bridge and neck pickups too low, doesn't capture sound on high e very well.)

So i can't try on it, for i'm fearful the sustainer has damaged the stock EMG, and will perhaps damage this one too, in case it is not already.

But i am hopeful now that you guys said it is common for EMGs to be like that. I'll just wait for the EMG and the seller to tell me to install it or not, for the sake of not voiding any warranty.

Thanks!

And if anyone else has seen stuff like this please share too, 'cause i'm still curious about it and others may be too. ^^

idiot. Does this dude ever think of googling out pics of other EMGs, and anything for that matter? It seems that it's common for this 81x to have a dent like that. Here's some I gathered in 2 seconds:

No reason to call someone an idiot. You never know the age or experience of someone.

I would have wanted to know about that as well and you certainly came to the right place to find out.
There is a wealth of knowledge and information on this site.

Definitely. And the good thing is that the good don't need to worry; Pyschoanalysis and History show us how "someone" has to be raped over and over to turn into that impolite disgrace, lol.
