well.. least to say.. i havent ever seen a floyded Destroyer II

so i guess you could say that they're rare.

few of the original 70's and 80's destroyers are up for sale.. they're pretty rare i'd say.
i'd like to own one in the future.. but the hard tail, 2 hum version

Re: Is this rare? hunting one down

I like it! I would like to have one also!

Re: Is this rare? hunting one down

I had a little buildup there myself when I saw the pic...but I don't think it was GAS :laugh2:

Looks like the one Phil COllen played...but didn't his have a ( :gag: ) Kahler?

well, believe it or not i found one, yesterday. A Woodgrain finish Hard Tail 1981 explorer. Fitted with new EMG pickups and in pristeen condition. Is it worth having a play? price is around $350USD though.

Re: Is this rare? hunting one down

i wasnt talking about Explorers.

i was talking about Sestroyers ;)

and yes.. go snatch it! you'd be stupid not to. the EMG's alone in there are worth what? 150?

Re: Is this rare? hunting one down

Tremolo's were, unfortunately, routinely added as "aftermarket" additions, and it's getting harder and harder to find original one's. Of course, if you use a tremolo, then this could be considered a bonus.

The DT 555's aren't exceptionally rare, but they are still cool... Phil Collens original guitars were "modified" to accomodate this, and Ibanez introduced the first factory tremolo in 1984. Not particularly great, but they worked.

Just so you know, an Ibanez Destroyer is the Explorer shaped (exact),

The Destroyer II is the one like the DT 555.(thus the II designation)

The most sought after DII is actually this one...

Another one, but with an added Kahler....

http://www.guitarshop.net/ibanezdestroyer2sunburst2b.htm

If you look at the back, you'll notice the "transparent" red over Mahogany.
Most DII's were basswood and the back had a solid red paint. The DT 555 is basswood, as is this DTII currently on Ebay....

http://www.frankspawnshop.com/images/ebay/destroyer 3.JPG

Although it's a bad picture, you can see it has a very solid paint color and the ding in the bottom right exposes the lighter basswood, also notice the binding around the headstock as opposed to the pictures above.

Mahogany has a tendency to resonate more than basswood, but all in all, unless you are seriously collecting them, it really doesn't matter.

They all play great, even the bolt-on neck's........happy hunting

the original destroyers.. meh.. couldnt care less for them.

but the destroyerII oooh.. with it's slightly altered shape = sexay!!!!

there was a reissue a couple of years back, but those were bolt ons VS the old ones that were set necks. could've picked one up from exesive, but i want an early 80's standard TOM one

are they good? you saw my other thread on buying one your opinion?

Re: Is this rare? hunting one down

the destroyerII's?

to be honest, i have never held, played or even saw one up close.

all i know is that they're great sounding guitars, with a much better neck than found on todays ibeehads

if a good deal would show up, yes, i'd buy one. ATM, i wouldnt go out of my way to buy one, as i got a custom guitar on order and cant shed even a dollar for anyhting else than the guitar lol

but yes, i'd wager that they're good guitars. and judgning by the fact that adrian smith and dave murray had several in the early days, they cant be bad, but to each his own and what works for them, might not work for you, or me for that matter. i might come across one and hate the feel and everything =/

Re: Is this rare? hunting one down

...Actually, Adrian Smith played a bolt-on neck DII. Testament to how good even they are!

The candy apple red one, I'm actually holding my '82 DII (candy apple red!)right now. Only 2 of the 5 I have are set neck, the other three are bolt-on. However, the quality is still just as good. These are the most common ones that show up on ebay, the set necks are rare enough, the mahogany ones are scarce. :)

Re: Is this rare? hunting one down

Buddy of mine bought a butt-ugly metallic blue bolt on Destroyer II years ago at a thrift shop for like $120 or something. I gave him a BUNCH of hell for it.... until I played it. One of the best sounding fiddles I have ever played. It's still his number one guitar.

Re: Is this rare? hunting one down

ok, it sounds freeking amazing with the stock pickups. The nickel covered neck pickup is so smooth. Its a destroyer II and it DOES have a bolt on neck, its still a slightly different shape to these those. Ill take a photo and put it up on here, i think it has been resprayed black.
