Isn't it great how everyone uses "plexi" to describe almost anything Marshall now?

It makes me feel so damn OLD to remember these great amps: The Marshalls, the Showmans, the Ampeg V-4s, the SUNN 1000S or 1200S...

We used them daisy-chained together--with a coil-cord, of course!

And nowadays, 35 watts is too loud!

LOL!

I think that perhaps it should be made law that every guitarist has to try a full Marshall "plexi" stack, on a stage, at full volume. They'll know what they're asking for then!!

In theory, laws are ment to defend society. :laugh2:

I agree - you can get duped

but a LOT of good sellers on ebay offer their OWN reviews and details that I have often found VERY honest and very informative. This is esp the case when I know the product and can tell they know what they are talking about. It's nice to know good people are out there.

I own a Metal Face that I call a Plexi too hahahaha

I always associated the Plexi sound with Hendrix and that nice weird almost crisp undertones. I get a bit of it from my Velocette, which is probably why I like it as much as I do!

I still dream of owning the perfect Bluesbreaker clone one day....

Here's a good start:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOvSozzjWOA.

-starts out pretty clean, gets gainier on the second chorus (2 min mark).

...and a more famous song:

-That's pretty much the quintessential LP/cord/plexi tone for me.

It's the same thing with people trying to sell White Stratocaster's. Nobody seems to be able to do it with making a Hendrix reference. "For sale white strat...Has that Jimi Vibe":smack: :no1: The term `Plexi' has become a misnomer, But sadly when someone says "Plexi Tone"... You have a idea what they mean.:smack: Regardless is it's coming from a Metal face or even a Valvestate.:eek13:

+ 1.

Side note - In his Marshalls, Hendrix preferred 6550s and not EL-34s as most people assume.

I like that tone. :smokin:

That must sound HUGE in person. Thank you!

Wasn't there a dude who hung out here who had like a 68 plexi head modded all to Triple Rectifier Gain Hell and kept referring to it as a "plexi" and advocated doing that to old Marshalls?

If you want an amp to sound like a SLO100, why not get a SLO100 instead of ****ing up a 35+ year old amp because it doesn't sound like you want it to?

Yeah, is nice. I liiiiike.

I imediately thought of Kossoff because his sound was bone-simple. A lot of the other famous plexi users got their sounds in more complicated ways: Clapton used plexis in Cream but had fuzz, wah, and tone knob shenanigans, and Hendrix used twins more often in the studio and had KT equipped marshalls with fuzztones in front for live. Eric Johnson hits his plexis with fuzz, and EVH was getting more gain than usual from somewhere...

Other sources of relatively 'pure' plexi tone are Billy Gibbons' 70s work with ZZ Top and Angus and Malcolm Young.

Live Cream recordings though are perfect examples of that Plexi tone. No fuzz there, at most wah or tone knob things. My favorite Plexi tone ever: Crossroads :smokin:

The Kossoff examples are great, his tone (and playing) is fantastic. There are many more but the clip of All Right Now and the live version of Crossroads are my favorite Plexi tones around.
