ISOLATION CABINETS

What are the iso cab options in the market these days. Recording with a baby at home is starting to be pain.

A quick MF search returned these below. Rivera seems to be over priced as usual. Is there a verdict on these yet?

Re: ISOLATION CABINETS

I have the Randall and use it all the time. I don't think the Jet City units are in current production.

Re: ISOLATION CABINETS

I have the Randall and it works well enough. The SilentSister clips I have heard online have sounded pretty impressive

I heard that - I went direct for many a tune with kids sleeping. Gets the ideas across, but not exactly tones you're super proud of. I thought about doing the reamping thing where when you get 20 minutes of time you could just fire up the equipment and quickly re-record some riffs with a mic. Just never dove into it.

If you find a small enough cab you could probably slam together an MDF enclosure with some padding inside and just toss in the cab and mic it and have a ball (maybe in a closet for added quietness). I've thought of a design where you could break it down into flat pieces to slide under a bed when not in use.

One thing to keep in mind -- an iso cab will only cut 29-30dB off of your volume. A cranked head will still be VERY loud.

A couple of things I did to get the sound down very low when using my iso cab is:

1. Get one of these
2. Get four of these
3. Wrap it all up in some of these

Then I put it into a closet or another (unoccupied) room. In-room it sounds like loud TV. The GRAMMA keeps bass waves from escaping and the blankets piled 4 deep cuts another 20+ dB from the volume.

These all very good pointers. Thank you.
I am planing on using the walk in closet in the empty guest room.

How would you compare your Randall ISO cab recording tone to your regular guitar cab tone? Does it sound as good as using a mic on a 4x12

It can but you have to think outside the box in terms of mic choice/ placements etc

Re: ISOLATION CABINETS

If you're open to alternative options, the best recorded tone I ever got was with the Line Out of my Weber attenuator.

I ran the amp head to the attenuator, then the attenuator (1/4") out to my CAI.

Since Weber attenuators essentially have a speaker inside them (they call it a "speaker motor," and it is a no-joke speaker voice coil that basically transfers the signal into heat as opposed to speaker movement) they sound very natural.

There's a silent solution that's not software.

Here is what it sounded like: http://soundcloud.com/hunterjsmith/weber-mini-mass-line-out

Pretty damn realistic in my opinion.

Re: ISOLATION CABINETS

your still going to have to move air, so a 1watt amp is not gonna cut it

another option is line 6 amp modeling, that is what I do for my recordings

more $$ and some would recommend axeFX - seems pretty good but stillnot near the real thing

This is basically correct. It takes a bit more work, and I generally prefer tracking the 4x12, but that is rarely possible (and NEVER for demos), so I've found that having 2-3 mic's and 2-3 different drivers helps. Swapping them out takes but a moment and helps add variety.

Re: ISOLATION CABINETS

There's also the AxeTrak: http://www.jlhproducts.com/axetrak/main.asp (I have one for sale)
x.

that is pretty amazing I am not gonna lie, why are you selling it

I cant fit even one more item in my apt tho even tho it is sooo small ... is it really that QUIET?? quiet enough for apartment but still sounds great for recording? my Orange thunderverb 50 has a built in attenuator, but with the small speaker of axetrak I bet it still is pretty loud and bass travels for apartments...

I don't need it since I got my AxeFx.

It would get down to TV volume in use. I'd generally run my amps at about 85-90dB with a regular cab in the room.

Exactly. I have a Greenback, a Tonespotter and a Texas Heat available for the iso cab. I have a selection of mics but generally the e906 gets it done with position tweaks

Re: ISOLATION CABINETS

I would love to add a 906 to my collection! For guitar tracks through the iso cab I use an e609, SM57 or Audix D2. Sometimes I use an AT PRO2 for clean/chime parts ...

I have and used the e609 as well. Its a good mic, just a bit brighter and that can be a good thing with certain amps

Re: ISOLATION CABINETS

I've added a Randall IsoCab to my studio recently and have begun "testing" tones with it for my CD project that I will start tracking next month (once I get my pickups from MJ installed =).

I have an SM57 and set it up with a gooseneck.. and have a decent sound.. but it has that boxiness... has anyone had good results with the Randall box and OTHER mics?? I'm looking for a heavy rock sound with power and girth.. I don't want buzziness or fizziness. Think "AUNCH" plus old Yngwie.. plus some good modern heaviness (but still clear.. no mush). =)

This is the place to come to learn about TONE!! Rock on!!
=)
