It Can Be Done, Gibson Quick Connect Repurposing

I'm not sure if anyone has tried this or not but I've got like 3 different stupid Gibson quick connect systems just laying around because I've ripped them out of my guitars. There's been a few times over the past couple years that I've thought to myself "What a waste!" because there is some quality parts mixed in with all that plastic....

500K Gibson long shaft potentiometers & Orange Drop capacitors (albeit with short legs) can be expensive when you need so many & every time I've done one I've bought all new stuff. If i had known that you could get viable pots out of the original (which I never intended to keep anyway) I could have saved myself quite a bit of money!!! C'est la vie right???

Anyway, the fact that I made it work may not come as a surprise to some of you but I was pretty impressed! Lol, I was sitting around kinda board this morning and I decided that I'd try and get one apart and see what happened. It takes some doing & I'd imagine a solder sucker or at least some solder wick is a must but it can be done with some want to & some patients...

I took the picture before I pulled the capacitors but they came out slick as, well you know what! The only things that are a bit of a PIA is the fact that the prongs are bent over backwards and they don't have any eyelets...

Neither of these things are very serious problems, you can easily bend them the right way as long as you do it carefully and if you can't get around the eyelet issue than you probably have no business soldering in the first place???

LOL, I know it's a dumb thread but I'm sure someone somewhere is thinking about pulling out their Q.C. harness & buying bits to build another right now, perhaps this will help them save some cash too??? Now I'm going to go find something to do with these guys!!!

Cool idea. I especially like the template. Wiring inside a Les Paul is a pain.

I like it. Less stuff in landfill, more money in pocket. Everybody wins!

Thanks for the tip!

Great ideas. Re-purposing is a good thing. I personally don't have a problem with the Q.C. system. Conductivity wise, it's no different than soldering.

I don't have a problem with it either, until you want to or have to change something. But I am guessing most people who buy LPs with them these days never even take that plate off.

Thanks guys....

I never really agreed with the solder-less system decision but I guess I understand why they did it??? They function fine and the only issue I've ever had with any Quick Connect Gibson had nothing to do with the plate, it was the switch & would have failed regardless....

The biggest problem with them as far as I'm concerned is I like to swap out my pickups, OFTEN!!! Unless you want to put in a newer Gibson pup with the proper connection attached already or really love splicing wires they just cause more problems than they're worth! Plus I just like building my own harnesses anyway, LOL!!!

You can read & match your potentiometers, choose what kind & what value capacitors go into them, and basically tailor make them around whatever pickups your planning on using. Actually if you'd like you can look at the one that I built from these parts as an example?

The reason I have that blue Chiclet capacitor sitting between the neck volume & tone pots instead of another oil can like what I've got in the bridge is because it was made for a SH-14 Custom/Phat Cat Les Paul. Those cheap little blue Chiclets sound flipping fantastic when you cock the tone knobs for the Phatty neck!

When I redid my P-90 SPECIAL I experimented with a bunch of different caps and pots until I got what I was looking for out of it! I ended up settling for a 500K volume, a 300K tone, and a vintage Bumble Bee capacitor I pulled out of a friend's guitar a few years back. This probably applies to Jr's more but because of the guitar's stripped down design having a lot of control over the entire tone spectrum is definitely a good thing!!!
