it has recently come to my attention...

Re: it has recently come to my attention...

I will testify to an epiphone's ability to kick ass with quality pickups. I keep hearing good things about the 57 classics, I must try em :)

I'd like a sheraton but I hear they've been discontinued?

I upgrade the PU's on all my Epis, and with a little of the normal tweaking here & there (set up, magnets, pots) they are easily made to sound very good.

Sheratons are still being advertised by the big dealers. Are you sure they're discontinued? If so, it must be pretty recent. Besides, there's still plenty around.

Re: it has recently come to my attention...

+1 for the Sheraton. Mine's actually MIK Sheraton II w/ an SD Seth neck pup. Beautifullly made, feels great, and what a range of sounds!!! Yeah, I really like mine.
Of course.. YMMV

Hamer Echotone in Aztec Gold

They're very well made and with upgraded electronics/pups are killer guitars.

+1. Beautiful guitars, but Aztec Gold Echotones have been out of production for about 10 years. Once in a while you see one pop on eBay. They also made an 'Echotone Custom' back then, red with gold hardware, block inlays, and a trapeze tailpiece. Wouldn't you know, the best two models were discontinued.

my bad, the sheraton is still around, I don't know what confused me. I'll try to scoop one up if I can, If not I'm going p-93 or casino.

am I right in saying that the way that a les paul custom has different cosmetics than a standard (specs aside) and is thus a prettier les paul, the sheraton has different cosmetics than the epi 335 and is a prettier es 335?

Re: it has recently come to my attention...

Sheratons have lots of bling, but they also feel and sound better than epi dots acoustically which is the real test of how good an axe is. Perhaps epi use better sounding blocks, neck wood etc. for the more expensive models? Pickups are easy to change. Yes a sheraton is a pretty 335 style guitar. now i know i am going to sound like a snob, but oh well.....try out an epi dot, a sheraton and a Gibson 335 without plugging in. You will know the difference.

I don't have to try it out to know the gibson will blow it out of the water. a friend has an epiphone g-400 which ive played a lot, and I had an SG special for a very short while before it belonged to my bandmate. the Gibson not only felt better in my hands, but resonated for longer among many other things.

thanks for helping me out man. after some thought though, I realized that this might come down to Epiphone Casino VS Epiphone Riviera P-93. I don't own a guitar with p-90s. I do however, own a semi hollow with a humbucker, so in my mind, the sheraton and dot (and etc) are out. I was told today that a local store has epiphone rivieras, the original kind, not the new p93, for about 500 bucks. I will try to check those out.

Re: it has recently come to my attention...

do they sound the same? i know the riviera is wired different, pay no mind to that. do the bridge and neck pickups sound roughly the same on both guitars?

Re: it has recently come to my attention...

Just for a point of reference:

I bought an Epiphone Dot Studio and upgraded the bejeezus out of it, and it's still just not quite "there."

Next semi-hollow I have will be one that feels great on day 1.

something to think about. I'm just looking for points of reference because I haven't been able to have a hands on experience with any of these guitars yet. someone is selling a yamaha for like 300 bucks here... CL....

I agree. The Studios just look like they've made too many cost cuts. I have a couple Dot Deluxes that are very nice, and the regular Dots are pretty good too.

Re: it has recently come to my attention...

I'd like to keep my es-333 the way it is, i dont use neck pickups much since alot of the time in my band im just singing and strumming. i like the bridge for that. i also like the way it looks.

At times it looks cool, but at times it doesn't.

I so recommend this! ;)

They are actually fantastic. Rich sound to my ears.

**** ive got to get my hands on those pickups.

I know the sheraton is a good guitar, buts its a semi hollow with humbuckers, id like to buy something different (full hollow, or P90s, etc)
