It's a good time to buy from Japanese retailers

A heads up; it's a good time to buy Japanese domestic market guitar products from Japanese retailers such as Ikebe or Ishibashi, who have all their pricing in yen, 1 USD = 117 JPY, the best it's been in seven years. In particular, I'd recommend checking out some of the unique MIJ Fender's for which there are no MIA or MIM equivalents.

Re: It's a good time to buy from Japanese retailers

You really have to see a MIJ in person to appreciate the difference between MIM and MIJ, which is hard to do since very few MIJs are sold in the US and elsewhere. The MIM's have a "MIA/hand-made, but in 1/4 the time" vibe. You can see inconsistencies, like a spot where they belt sanded too much or too little, little things that tell you it was made by human hands. The MIJs, by contrast, almost seem too perfect to be hand made. They feel less class "Fender" than either MIA or MIM. I like them both, though. If I want to play precise, the MIJ's inspire me to play precise, and if I want to play a little more sloppy and freewheeling, then the MIMs feel like the right tool for the job.

Re: It's a good time to buy from Japanese retailers

Although I agree MIJ Fenders are the ****

I find it funny how a better fit and finished guitar makes you want to play more fit and finished.

Re: It's a good time to buy from Japanese retailers

The problem is the prices in general went up quite a bit once the general buying public became aware of edwards, fender japan, tokai, etc.

Also, you are now far more likely to have hefty customs fees for importing. 10 years ago, they rarely slapped a fee on the MIJ imports. With the Lacey act hoola, and the recent rash of fakes out of China, it's an added expense that devalues them.

Also, after getting absolutely nowhere with EMS and The USPS (each blaming each other, and the seller was worthless helping me with EMS) on my last imported guitar from Japan that was damaged in transit, I am done.

Then factor in, as well built as they are, they still can be a tone turd. I had an amazing edwards, that sounded like absolute garbage with its thick lacquer over poly finish (WTF??).

And you also take a big hit when/if ya sell them.

Its a big crapshoot in my 1/2 dozen experiences

Re: It's a good time to buy from Japanese retailers

That might all be true, but if you want one anyway, USD buying power against JPY is at it's best right now.

I've only dealt with Fender Japan products tbh, tonewise it seems to vary from model to model rather than guitar to guitar. Fender Japan uses basswood for the most part, which tends to be pretty stable tone-wise; acoustically solid. The only MIJ's I dont care for tone-wise happened to have alder bodies.

Regarding damage in shipping, I've gone mostly through Ikebe and Ishibashi, but also others, and they have all packaged the guitars really well. Guitar in a gig bad, or beside a gig bag, in a box, wrapped in padding in yet another box, so altogether there's three to four inches of distance between the guitar and the outside of the packaging. Ebay sellers and US based retailers have tended to be a lot more skimpy with the packaging, often with no secondary box. The boxes I've received from EMS/USPS also tend to be free of dents, like they were handled well. Again, for whatever reason, domestically moved boxes always seem to be worse shape.

I can't comment on how the prices have changed over time since I wasn't shopping for them ten years ago. I really don't think they're that well know to the general public, though, just based on what I've seen in discussion forums. I think most people find what they want domestically and look no further. Compared the MIM and MIA, they aren't a great value, since you pay more for shipping (or whatever goes into that) that you'll never get back if/when you resell later. If they were 15% cheaper across the board, and had free shipping, they would be preferable to MIMs (and I think those price points would be obtainable if they were officially offered in North America). But if what they happen to be selling is worth the additional $150~ to you, as it is to me, then it's not a problem.

The ebay resale on the unique Fender Japan models has been pretty strong. If they are mint (by mint I mean "ebay mint"), they tend to go for more than what they had cost new if several years have elapsed since they were last offered new. I've seen this with limited edition Epiphones as well, like the Noel Gallagher Union Jack was $800 new(?), and go for $1500 - $2500 now. How well it stacks up against a traditional investment vehicle, I don't know, but it's not an unsafe purchase so long as you keep them free of wear and cosmetic damage.

Re: It's a good time to buy from Japanese retailers

What does shipping normally run on them? I have a MIJ tele that I love and wouldn't mind having another one at all.

Re: It's a good time to buy from Japanese retailers

The last guitar I ordered was $118.38 "shipping/insurance fee". Again, I'm not exactly a bargain hunter when it comes to MIJ Fenders.

Which MIJ Tele has caught your eye?

Re: It's a good time to buy from Japanese retailers

Where would one buy a MIJ from? I'm in Australia where the dollar has just been smashed but we're still getting 100 odd yen to the dollar.

Plus we don't get customs fees for items costing less than AUD$1000

Here are some links,

http://www.ikebe-gakki.com/ if you see something you like, email overseas@ikebe.co.jp

http://www.ishibashi.co.jp/ send inquiries to intl@ishibashi.co.jp

http://www.guitarplanet.co.jp/ email electric@guitarplanet.co.jp

Then there's the Japanese retail aggregate sites:

http://www.j-guitar.com/

http://global.rakuten.com/en/ , be sure to select "Japan" as the shipping country, and if you see something you like, it's often best to contact the shop directly rather than try to buy through the Rakuten purchase system.

The 70 thinline, nothing between a Squier and a high end American model in the normal retail lines.

Is there one retailer that stands out even slightly ahead of the rest?
Thanks for sharing info....

Re: It's a good time to buy from Japanese retailers

All three were great to work with. Each have attached pictures when I had questions about the cosmetics of a particular guitar. They're almost hard to tell apart from a customer service standpoint.

Thank you for that. I'll take a look. I've wanted to get my hands on a MIJ Fender for a while now.

Re: It's a good time to buy from Japanese retailers

I keep looking at Ishibashi, especially for 80's Matsumoku neck-thru stuff that never made it to where I grew up. LIke, "Thor Sound" or "Tri SOund" things. Man I could lose days just paging thru their inventory! Also, lots of their EPiphone stuff has the "Gibson" shaped headstocks, in case the shape is important to you...

Re: It's a good time to buy from Japanese retailers

Just out of curiousity if I was looking for a lefty tele, iceman, or explorer is it worth my time to try the japanese market? I am really having a hard time finding what I want in the US market, really been thinking of grabbing a blue MIM tele and converting it to double humbuckers....

Can you link to an example? Some vintage Epiphones had Gibson-like head stocks while others had the carved out corners, so I'm curious to see what we're dealing with.
