It's Been Such a Long Time...

My daughter (age 24) is expressing interest in learning to play, and I want to teach her... but it's been so long since I first learned that I'm not even sure where to start! Anyone know of a good "lesson plan" to follow? She's most interested in electric guitar and probably metal as a genre, but I want her to learn/understand chords and theory as well... not just learn to play power chords.

Thanks a bunch!

For me Brian Guitar Method 1 by AAron Stang that's what my Instructor started me out with. Teaches all styles of music, including rock, pop, folk, and classical. Its very informative . Its great to see this happening for you my friend have fun!!;)

You have to judge how she learns...she might not stick to a particular plan, but a very overall 'here are some chords...lets play some songs together' might be a great place to start. Not everyone can or will stick to a plan (I did, but I think I am weird). Figure out what she wants to learn and start with that...fill in the other stuff as she gets more interested.

I know that you give lessons Mincer, so I appreciate your feedback.

Sounds to me like you’re saying to not bore her with the “why“ right now but to pique her interest with the “how.“ Is that right?

When I think back, I taught myself how to play with a couple of books and my ears, and I did that for about nine months… just enough to really get me interested. By that time I was practically begging inside or someone to help me grow faster. It was at that time that I started to take lessons from a guy for about two years (until I graduated from high school). I guess when I think about it, I started out with the “how“ too!

I’ve known a lot of guys (and gals) over the years who could play some things but had no understanding whatsoever of any of the theory or chord structure for what they were playing. I always noticed that those people had a lot of trouble problem solving when it came to hearing some odd chord in a song. I have always felt that if any of my kids wanted to play, I wouldn’t want them to fall into the category of someone who doesn’t understand what they’re doing. I want more for them. But I guess, when I think about it, I really didn’t learn any theory until later on.

I really appreciate your input!

Re: It's Been Such a Long Time...

I learned classical first and then switched to rock/metal. It actually confused me because I couldn't believe how simple the chord structure was for rock in comparison to classical. If she's interested, teach her the simple stuff that she's interested in first. Better to do that than have her lose interest because it's overly complicated and doesn't sound like the stuff she likes to hear. If her interest continues, she will seek out the more complex stuff on her own.

Always start with something that will get them excited to play and stick with it...if that's just power chords so be it. Nothing disinterests young guitarists like making it feel like a study vs a hobby. It won't take long before you can start sneaking that stuff in and it will naturally become more interesting as they want to explore the 'why'.

Re: It's Been Such a Long Time...

I asked her today if there were any particular songs she would like to start off learning.

She said, “TNT.”
