Here we go...

I've been GASSING for an R6 for over a year. Fell in love with P90's and I always thought the goldtop was the nicest looking Paula. So I've been following R6 auctions on Ebay and watched them go from an average of around $1750 last year, to about $2100-2300 since late last year. Last week I notice a guy with a BIN at $1950 with free overnight shipping. Thing was virtually new (an 05) and looked great. I jumped on it and the axe came a few days later along with COA, hardshell case from Custom Shop, etc.

I opened her up last night. When I opened the case I nearly let out a gasp. I could not believe how beautiful it was. I picked it up and was surprised about the weight - did not weigh a ton (it's 9.4) and it was in INCREDIBLE condition. There wasn't one scratch, ding, pick mark anywhere! I then proceeded to plug in and here's how it goes....

First impression of finally playing a real LP - the resonance was insane. Being an SG player, this was night and day. As I cranked the Traynor, every chord I played was felt in my chest. It feels so damn POWERFUL. I picked up the SG afterwards and felt like I was playing a banjo.

Tone
Bridge pup made me think "Tele on Steroids". Very twangy at times, did the Johnny Cash thing, rockabilly etc. NO PROBLEM. That was clean. I then dirtied it up and it snarled like a cornered animal. Nasty. Favorite tone thus far is through bridge pup, master volume on amp down to 1 or 2 (others in the house:smack: ) and volume in the clean channel cranked. Great dirty sound ,think early Freddy King or Hubert Sumlin. It also gets a GREAT Malcom Young, vintage AC/DC rythym thing going on.

Neck pup has been great. Got an insane "Woman Tone" by rolling down to 1 or 0 and cranking the amp.Think the solo in "American Woman". When played clean, the neck pup rolled back approaches jazz box territory. When playing in the Traynor gain channel, the thing does metal. It's very heavy and if you don't believe me listen to the latest Social Distortion record, where they are blasting powerchords on P90 driven goldtops.

The P90's are wonderful, but as of yet I have not been able to get that warm, smooth vintagy-PAF tone (I am trying to nail the Clapton/Cream tone in "Sleepy Time' on the Fresh Cream record). Of course I haven't been able to try everyting yet so maybe it is attainable. The P90's defintely have a bottom, but the emphasis is def the mids and top. A very raw sound, yet maybe the combination of the the LP's mass and fiddling with knobs and amp settings can tame the P90 "over-the-topness". Actually, I know it can because there are guys playing this that don't do rock/blues (the guitarist in Sade used a goldtop with p90's for one) and sound smooth.

Now here are the negatives.
1)Price - It was a good deal relative to the Ebay market, but in hindsight I'm thinking maybe I could have just bought an Epi Elitist or an Edwards for $900-1100.

2)The P90's hum LIKE MAD. Especially in the high gain channel.

3)Somewhat uncomfortable to play as I am use to an SG. How the hell do you play in the upper register?! Also, the gtr keeps falling off my leg.

4) The guitar does not sustain well unless I'm in high gain. This was very surprising. Any ideas?

All in all, she's a beauty and I'm sure I will work out the kinks as I adjust from playing an SG and strat (I did't mention my JV - thanks for the advice Christian!) to an LP.

Now the pics...

thats a little odd about the sustain. A LP should sustain real good.

looks awesome though man. I love those P90 pickups

Smokin guitar bro. I have that very same model. I love mine. Honestly though, mine sustains for days and mine is dead stock.

Here's a little more info:

The guitar sounds AMAZING unplugged. There is a resonance and clarity that is unsurpassed in any gtr I have played. You literally feel each note and you can distinguish everything because it is so crystalline. So I definitley have good wood. As for the sustain issue, I don't know what gives. I mostly played it clean so I'll have to try to pick up the volume tomorrow and see it that helps is sing some more.

A few more playing notes - through the gain channel (more of a Marshall "crunch" setting) I was able to nail an early Zeppelin vibe. Very similar sounding to Page's tone on the BBC record. Guitar definitely owns 50's rock and early hard rock like Zep,Who, AC/DC where the rythym parts weren't very dirty.

congrats.....as for sustain, maybe a Tonepros bridge. Playing a Les Paul for the first time usually makes you realize that you had the bass knob on your amp turned up too high.....and the volume know fort that matter :laugh2:

Re: It's Here! LP '56 Goldtop pics and review

dont use light strings, 10's or 11's. dr pure blues 11's sound best to me on mine
how high is the action? i find that raising it a little may help if its low
how high is the tail piece set off the body? my suggestion is to adjust it so the strings just clear the back of the bridge. if that means the tailpiece is on the body, thats evenbetter.

Re: It's Here! LP '56 Goldtop pics and review

That is a bit strange....all four of my Les Pauls sustain until such time as a damp the strings to keep them from starting to feed back:laugh2: and i don;'t have anything you would call a high gain amp. The Marshall is the closest and it is pretty much stock 1960's handwired spec. Mine even howl throught the Vibrolux, which is a pretty clean amp compared to the others.

Re: It's Here! LP '56 Goldtop pics and review

Yeah, I agree with Jeremy. Sustain has a lot to do with action height.
Find the height that responds best to your playing attack, and it should fix itself. I think P-90's are technically single coils, so yeah, the hum is just something to work with. Just leave the other guitars in their cases, and bond with this one for awhile, and you'll grow into it. Every guitar needs to be given that chance.

Oh yeah, and put it on, then go look in the mirror. Tell me it's not the sexiest looking guitar you ever owned! I love my goldtop. Anytime I've seen a picture of me using it under stage lights, I'm amazed at how cool it looks from a distance. It just glows like no other guitar.

I agree. I nearly got wood when I opened the case for the first time!
It is a very unique guitar. I don't think I even need my Strat any longer b/c the cleans are so nice on this. The description of a Tele on steriods is accurate. Now if I can figure this sustain issue and then dial in the smooth, warm , creamy Clapton Fresh Cream tone I'll be home free.

Very nice, I love my Goldtop as well, I went with the '57 though. There is just something about a Goldtop that won't allow me to take my eyes off it. Love maybe? :)

NICE!

You will learn to get around playing the upper frets or you will just stop playing there?!:smack:

As for the price...trust me, you did a good thing...that guitar will walk from an Epi Eli or an Edwards in every way except the price plus it will hold it's value for a while!

AS for the hum...learn to deal...the tone of P-90s are worth the hum IMO...I dis like the hum in singles but they sound so damn good I deal with it!

Thats a killer guitar bro...play it for a long time!

BTW...still digging the JV?

Re: It's Here! LP '56 Goldtop pics and review

Re: It's Here! LP '56 Goldtop pics and review

Looking cool!

Are there are any stacked p90's or something like that you can buy to get rid of the hum?
