it's raining cabs

Re: it's raining cabs

4ohm output means you can safely push 16 and 8ohm cabs all day. That head could push 4 16ohm 4x12s if it had to.

Re: it's raining cabs

As for the main event... That is a real, honest to gods, 1994 or earlier Green MATAMP 4x12. This is the same type of cab Matt Pike toured & recorded with for SLEEP and the first few High on Fire albums. I bought it from Shane from Odessa and perhaps more famously DOOMSAYER... And he told me not to quote him, but he's pretty sure the guy he bought it from 15+ years ago bought it from Matt Pike.

The 100w Celestion speakers in the Matamp emphasize the lows and make it seriously growl. The Orange PPC412 with V30s is way more focused in the mids. I imagine the Orange PPC412HP which rocks a different kind of 100w Celestion is similar but I've never had both in the same room.

I know a dude with one of those PPC412HPs in black... I wonder if I can talk him out of it...

Looks like Hank III owns them now.

Re: it's raining cabs

I spent all day driving to obtain this cab, then had band practice, but now I've had about 13 beers and I've got a tall glass of wine to finish before I fall asleep, so I actually feel like talking about this crap.

The Emperor 2x12 is bad ass and was a total stroke of luck.
I bought a solidstate 100w Gibson 2x12 from a guy almost a year ago and I liked it a lot (sounded very BBKing clean and very Greg Ginn with dirt pedals) but I never used it.
I put it in the clist and a dude offered to swap for the Emperor.
YES PLEASE. 16ohm with Swamp Thangs. 300w of ebony-stained awesome.

I love what the Swamp Thangs do in my little 2X12 cab . . . fantastic speaker !

CONGRATZ on a fantastic score mate !

Re: it's raining cabs

Thanks man.

It's cool having such amazing gear at my disposal because it eliminates any excuse I have not to make music.

I knew Hank had those but the story I was told was that this cab was bought from a band who opened for HoF back when the green Matamps had no US distribution... So maybe Matt sold this one then went back to England to get more?

Pike or not, this specific cab was on some solid albums and um it sounds incredible. I can't wait to hear the wall...

Re: it's raining cabs

probably for the best. There's probably an evil humor or spirit attached to something that made a Sleep album. A 3rd generation hillbilly should be able to take the strain of dealing with it.
I wouldn't consider the strong smell of dank an evil humor or spirit.

Re: it's raining cabs

OP, build your own already.... Or at least retolex something. Buying up a pawnshop or two's worth gets real okd, real fast... Hurry up and catch the diy bug before your garage turns into yet another guitar center!

Or at least open em up and document the speakers (if a decent % is used, chances are youre in for some surprises)

Re: it's raining cabs

Why would I build a new cab myself when there are people trying to get rid of quality cabs for so cheap?

Why would I retolex a rare or vintage cab that's in great condition?

All speakers are stock and original.

I've been buying, selling and trading gear for years man... Hasn't gotten old yet. I have about half of what each cab is worth invested into them if that... I can't build something better for less, and people will actually buy these if I want to sell them. :smokin:

Sick piece! Congrats... I wish people over here were like that instead of asking ridiculous money for cheap SS amps and behringer guitars... you have no idea what used-gear hell it is where I live.

Re: it's raining cabs

Heh thanks. I work at a music store in a pretty big music town so I have unusual access to gear. It's a blessing and a curse. My pockets are empty but my stacks are huge :smokin:

Re: it's raining cabs

My pockets are empty tooz ;)

did u need a ladder to stack up those stacks for teh picture??? they are getting pretty tall!! :headbang:

Re: it's raining cabs

I did not need a ladder but I probably should've asked a friend for help. Every muscle in my back is on fire. Funny story: I had to push the cabs all the way against the wall and get the camera all the way against the opposite wall to get those pix that don't even capture the whole thing... And then I realized I had to move it a foot or two away from the wall so that I could access the back and experiment with which cabs sound best through which heads... So I had to tear it down and rebuild it.

I'm thinking of starting a series of workout videos for musicians and roadies... Deadlifting 4x12s, benchpressing vintage tube heads, curling Les Pauls, etc...

Re: it's raining cabs

Put these guys in the living room so I can play while I watch family guy. Honestly, I could sell it all and get by on this. I mean I'm not going to, but I could.

I love the V30s in my Orange but I'm extremely impressed by these Swamp Thangs...

Re: it's raining cabs

You could sell the Bassman? I mean it makes sense but I couldn't see you getting rid of an amp with such sentimental value. Mine will stay with me forever.

Re: it's raining cabs

No, I would probably not actually sell my Bassman because it was my first real amp... I won't sell any of this stuff unless I need to... But if we're being totally serious, a silverface bassman is a lot easier to replace than a Sunn model T. And my model T has so much mojo.

Sexier pic because this **** makes me so ****ing happy

The thing with the model T is that it sounds a lot like a Fender when you keep the preamp tame and crank the master... But the preamp gain is so so heavy... 80% of rock riffs sound perfect with both preamp volumes set around 6 and the master wherever it needs to be. A quality pedal sends it way over the edge.

TLDR idgaf I sound like goatsnake
