Re: It's time.

Three very different guitars. It makes me think you are wanting a Gibson just because you want "A Gibson." Instead of chasing a brand name you think you ought to own, I'd chase a tone you want. Which tone is it? SG Standard, Les Paul Standard, or semi-hollow?

The way I see it, the SG and the 333/335/345/355 are the most versatile of the three types you mentioned. Along with Teles, those two guitar designs make up the holy trifecta of world's most versatile guitar types (IMHO). The Les Paul does its "Les Paul Thing" the best of the lot, but it is less versatile over all, and IMO is at its best only when you can really open it up volume-wise. To me, a Les Paul is like a musical bludgeon. Brutal low-end thump that knocks you hard in the guts...but you really need to swing the hell out of a bludgeon for it to do what it does best! And you don't always have the room to do that in every band or for every song, especially if you are a sideman. With a LP, I have to put a lot of effort into playing to its strengths, and that can get old sometimes. I love LPs, but I would really dislike having one as my only guitar, or even as my only Gibson model.

i like the SG overall.

I love how big the 33?s are. they feed back too!

I like the les paul because apart from solos, most of the time im doing chords.

Re: It's time.

I love all three of those designs. I'd pick whichever one you feel covers the most bases, since you'll only be getting one of them.

Is there any chance you can buy locally? Or is there just no selection in Puerto Rico?

in PR there's a dealer, but I really want to buy used.

used there is barely no market, guitars are sold and bought but theyre arent guitars like these.

Re: It's time.

I would get a Hagstrom Viking Deluxe.

... the whole entire theme of this thread pisses me off though. It goes against everything I have ever believed in.

Re: It's time.

I'm not sure what's going on here, but astro, use your head, but also your "heart."

If you're going to be happy, go do what you want to do - I'm cool with it as long as it doesn't negatively affect me.

Re: It's time.

Yes, I read that in an earlier post. And I agree an SG would cost you less and sound good.

Hey, whatever became of your gf? Is she still around?

yes.

to be honest friend, for that kind of money I'm hoping to find an SG standard in decent shape.

thanks.

Re: It's time.

All this drama, just to settle on the SG that you knew was awesome in the first place?

I oughta swim to frickin' 'Rico and kick your @$$!!!!

Re: It's time.

Did we ever find out why an SG and a 335 are the two choices in the bowl?

ive played an SG for a while now, I hated how it felt at first but then realized Id just been wearing it too low.

I love the way the neck feels, it's comfortable, not to mention light. I like the tones I got out of it as well, meaty but punchy.

I like Les Pauls because of how ****ing big they sound for rhythms. they just sound fat. In the studio a good LP standard would be a great asset.

I love 335s becuase they are huge. I have long arms, it feels good to have plenty guitar to wrap them around. I also love feed back and how "alive" the guitar sounds.

Re: It's time.

sg standard is awesome!

a hollow body elec guitar is gonna have feedback that is annoying if you play with blink182 gain... nice for cleans tho!

Re: It's time.

My friend with the SG keeps insisting that I not buy one because he says I can borrow his whenever I feel like it.

I think I'll take him up on the offer.

I keep coming back to the Les Paul standard in my mind recently.

a local shop has the classic custom

its going for $1500. maple top and everything... baked maple board.

when the time comes I'll play it for as long as I need to make sure I get a feel for the instrument, but right now at that price its hard to ignore.

it has 57 classics and all the binding... except for the back.

Re: It's time.

it has traditional weight relief, so I don't feel so crappy about it.

I shudder to think they make les pauls like these now:

jesus, if i wanted that I'd get a gretsch jet!

Re: It's time.

that's a very interesting guitar, IMO
as it'll be your #1 go-anywhere do-everything gui, not having binding on the back to grind off could be seen as an advantage; grain filler and clear nitro and you're home again
i've not (knowingly) played baked maple, but ebony boards are quite at home on LPs IMO...
what are they asking?
