I've decided. DMT Baker Act > JB

CTN

The Drama Dude
After playing my new dean a bunch over the past few days, I've come to the following conclusions about the DMT Baker Act:

1) It has a distinctly JBish kinda tone to it. Really present biting upper mids.

2) The low end is a lot tighter than the JB

3) the mids are not as harsh/spikey

4) It's a really rocking pickup. Lots of attack on the notes courtesy of the upper mids, but it can also clean up really nicely, and is quite responsive to picking dynamics.

5) harmonics everywhere, sorta like the JB.

I've said many times before, the JB sounds like if you took a perfectly good Duncan Custom, ramped up the output, and then put the whole pickup in a 3D sonic vise, with a tiny hole so the upper mids escape from there in a tinny, shrill mess....meanwhile, Chris farley is farting while emitting his trademark high pitched whine. loose, flabby bass, lots of girth, and a whole helluva lot of ear-piercing unnatural mids.

The Baker Act, IMO is what the JB should've been. It's got that girth and output, but with tight bass and a smoothed out EQ on the mids, though still very present.

It makes my Jet City JCA100H sound like a cranked plexi, sorta. :headbang:

Re: I've decided. DMT Baker Act > JB

It is hellaciously underrated, for sure, and possibly their best pickup. It's too bad Dean's image is such that everybody thinks all they make is junk for Dimesheep.

Sounds cool! And I love the jb so I may have to try one! Not bad on the price ether.....

Re: I've decided. DMT Baker Act > JB

Yeah I was looking at it pretty hard about a year ago. Can't find any bad reviews on it.

Re: I've decided. DMT Baker Act > JB

I was looking at them also. Does it have more bass then the JB, or about the same?

Re: I've decided. DMT Baker Act > JB

about the same output?? I REALLY like the MOT and nostalgia in my soltero!

Re: I've decided. DMT Baker Act > JB

Lot's of love for it over in Dean land....

JB but better, you say. I have a tentative Caddy project in my head - but it really calls for a Pink JB.

Guess I need a second project...

I think it's kind of the way it has to be for now. Most of the big Dime fans are relatively young and don't have much money, so you mainly see bolt-on imports with mystery pups. Wait until thousands of them are making six figures and having midlife crises; Dean will be selling $3k USA tribute models out the ass.

Re: I've decided. DMT Baker Act > JB

seriously...fantastic pickup for traditional metal/hard rock kinda stuff.

Megadeth, Accept, AC/DC, Grave Digger...EVH stuff also sounds good through it!

A bit bright for blues, but it still sounds nice and organic.

Re: I've decided. DMT Baker Act > JB

it is pretty cool and the BlazeBucker by Dean is a very good sounding Alnico 8 humbucker.

Re: I've decided. DMT Baker Act > JB

I am a JB fanatic so it will take some convincing me before i believe it is better than a JB

It just so happens that I've got a Baker Act on its way as we speak. Gonna drop it in my good ol' Jackson Rhoads. That will allow me to compare it side-by-side with my new JB-equipped Charvel.

It would be tough for any pickup to beat the JB at its own game in that Charvel! The Rhoads certainly isn't a perfect platform for comparison, but I'm very familiar with the JB and looking to carry some of its traits over to the Jackson, which is why I decided to try the Baker Act in the first place. I'll let you know my thoughts once I have a chance to try it out :)

Re: I've decided. DMT Baker Act > JB

In my opinion, the videos out there leave much to be desired, especially the youtube versions. I've checked out all the sound clips and videos (including that one) I could round up on the Baker Act...couldn't get a solid feel for the pickup, but read great opinions from users, so I ordered one :)

On other forums, many who love the JB find kinship with the BA. Maybe there's something to it...maybe not.

I'm going to reserve final judgement for when I have the actual pickup in my hands, which will be very soon.

Re: I've decided. DMT Baker Act > JB

in these kinds of threads the OP always says that "pickup x" is better than the JB because it has tighter bass and no "anoying mid peak"

what nobody realizes is A: if a pickup doesn't share the defining charactaristics of a JB...comparing them is pretty retarded, and saying one better than the other is even dumber and B: the elastic, squishy bass and vocal upper mids are THE REASON WE LIKE THE JB, so saying another pickup is superior for lacking those qualities does not make any sense to me.

but I'm glad you like your pickup...
