I've done a terrible thing...

Re: I've done a terrible thing...

If you're not going to rewind your ruined coil, turn it into a Duncan pendant. Duncan even sells them. I got one at the last User Group Day.

Take gold string and wind it where the wire was, and add a chain.
Not my style, but that's very creative.

I'll point out there's no guarantee that the next dead p'up you find will have the right coil shorted out. Bite the bullet, and send the survivor for repair...
Would the wrong coil be unusable? I assumed that I could swap the leads (to reverse current flow) and replace the slugs with screws. Or am I wrong about that?

Only reason I considered this is cause I thought Duncan coils were matched, something about DiMarzio having the patent for mismatched coils.

If I sent it in for a rewind, would they charge less than the quoted online price if I sent only the empty bobbin? Less work for them. I can reassemble it myself.

Make an hybrid (as already suggested) with the part of the pickup that still works properly. Or at least it is what I would do. I destroyed a 59n a couple of months ago. Once I have a duncan custom to cannibalize I will make my own 59/custom hybrid :1:

Any Hybrids would be mismatched, of course. As far as the price contact them and see. It might be cheaper than you think, so it is worth a try.

I was quoted $30 by SD to rewind the coil, no re-assembly included.

Are there any reputable 3rd party winders out there, or is it recommended to stick with the original manufacturer?

For $30 I'd have SD do it.

Yeah, that is a good price, and it would be done right the first time. Worth it to resurrect a JB,

The committee has spoken. Thanks for your input guys, I guess I'll send it in.
