The cool thing about the Pearly Gates is that it is kinda like the JB in a band context. The bridge pickup is perhaps a bit bright on its own, but it fits in a band mix perfectly. That sizzle gives it a great lead tone and definition without being buzzsaw cutting in the highs. I really like Alnico II Pros as well, but prefer the Pearly Gates. There is just some quality about them that I cant describe, but just works perfectly in a les paul

FWIW, I have no idea how the '59 could be considered "boomy" unless you have you have your amp settings cranked to 11 on the low end. I find the the '59 to be the clearest of the PAF bunch.

You should really consider modding for single coils if our recommendations aren't tickling your fancy.
