I've got questions...youve got answers

Hello,
I am new to the forum and I have a couple questions I wanted to throw out to y'all and see what kind of advice I get.

For starters, I am building a project strat. The body is a MIM Jimmy Vaughan two-tone. I have no desire to stay true to a strat tone or anything of this sort. I just find the body style to be comfortable. It has a mohagany/ebony neck and will have a tremolo bridge. I want to be able to get a good rock distortion (for full on rocking and palm muting) and also a good bluesy lead tone.

So far I have been very intrigued by the Phat Cats. Would they sound good with the woods I am using? As of now they are my first choice, but I am also throwing around the idea of only getting a Phat Cat in the neck. Suggestions for the bridge? Or do you think the phat cat bridge is capable of what I want? I was considering the duncan distortion, but really Im not sure. Thanks in advance for any advice. Im exciting about putting together my own dream guitar.

Welcome to the forum Joe. I don't have experience with the Phat cat, so I can't help you there. Is the guitar routed for a full size humbucker? I would suggest a fullsize HB for the bridge and keep single coils in the mid and neck position. I used a '59 bridge HB with SSL-1's and it was a versatile combo for blues & rock. I'm sure more folks will chime in with other ideas.

Thanks for the reply. The guitar is routed for a full size humbucker. I dont plan on putting anything in the middle position. Im excited for some insight here from those who use the phat cats.

I have enjoyed my Phat Cat from day one, it sounds great and handles distortion wonderfully.
I think it would work well with the woods you mentioned.

I used a Phat Cat set in several guitars, and the neck pickup is quite a lot bassier-sounding than the bridge one. Obviously, neck-position pups have more bass than bridge ones, but I prefer more tonal balance. (To illustrate my point, I don't like a 59N paired with a 59B because the 59N tends to be bassier than I'd like; I find a Jazz Neck to be a better complement to the 59B). So coming from this background, I'd go for a real full-sounding pickup in the bridge, such as the Custom.

I use 2 59's in one of my strats with a stew mac mega switch (both 59s are bridge models). The mega switch helps to use the spliting/mixing of coils in series and parallel, giving a very versital setup for a variety of different styles. I'm sure there are other switches that give even more combinations but this one works for me.
