Jackson DK2FS Pickup Change

Forever Blind

Hiya,

I currently own a Jackson DK2FS, pickup setup:

Bridge - Duncan Designed HB-102B
Middle - Duncan Designed SC-101
Neck - Duncan Designed SC-101

These are the standard pickups but i really want to get a far more heavier sound from my guitar. I play through a Marshall Jackhammer into a Marshall AVT-275. I mainly play death metal ie Carcass, At The Gates, CoB, In Flames, Cannibal Corpse etc...

Any pickup pros out there that can aid me in choosing the right pickups?

Thank you

Hey Forever Blind WELCOME to the Forum!

For what you are wanting to accomplish you could go two ways. Some guys prefer using a smoother sounding pup with high gain and some with a higher output pup for more oomph or articulation. Also are you wanting to stick with single coils in the neck and middle slots?

For a higher output set you could go with a JB/Custom/Distortion/Invader any of these you would get Trem-spaced.

The JB is a high output A5 pup with fair lows good highs a a large upper mids spike. It is the most popular bridge pup and very versatile

The Custom is a high ouptut ceramic pup with great response through the spectrum with good mids and highs but with the aggressive edge provided by the ceramic magnet.

The Distortion is a high output pup with a winding and DC resistance similiar to the JB but with an oversized ceramic magnet. The Distortion has lots of mids and highs and is also aggressive sounding.

The Invader has 6 large hex screw cap polepieces. It is a high output pup as well and has 3 ceramic magnets which contribute to a aggressive high output sound with lots of thud.

If you want single sized buckers for the neck and middle you can go with 59s, JBjr's or lil screamin demons. For rails you can go with the cool or hot rails.

For single coils in the neck and middle you can go with the alnico 2 pros, vintages, hots, or customs.

Give me a little more info on what you want from the other slots and your ideal tone. Warm and thick? Cold and Piercing?

Hope that helps man!

Hey,

Thank you for you very descriptive reply.

Ill definatly look into the hums you mentioned, im thinking at the mo that the Custom sounds like a definate option.

Im not sure whether i would like to keep the singles, would you be able to tell me the advantages of having single buckers instead?

Id like to get a nice warm tone that has a real aggressive edge, like a red hot razor about to penetrate flesh haha....

I hope this helps, as you may guess im a total novice in the pickup department. If you need any more information just shout dood.

Thank you

Being a novice is OK! We're all here to help one another!

If you want a REAL aggressive edge, go with a distortion, dimebucker, invader, or custom. If your guitar is made of alder, poplar, or basswood you'll get good or great results from the invader. I mean do you want to melt faces with lead tone?

If it was me going with a neck and middle single sized bucker I'd go lil 59, then JBjr. Or two JBjr. Unless you have a custom in the bridge then I'd go with two lil 59. I guess I need to know what you want from these two slots to help you the most.

Do you play clean at all? Do you want the aggressive hot bucker sound? or do you want a vintage-esque single or hot single sound?

Hope that helps some mor.

For rails you can go with two hot rails two coil rails

Re: Jackson DK2FS Pickup Change

You could get a Dimarzio X2N ...or whatever they call it. It's VERY high output. Most people that like new metal-y stuff love that pickup. good luck anyway.

Re: Jackson DK2FS Pickup Change

Hiya,

Thanks again for the replies...

I definatly dont want a nu-metal sound. Want old school death metal, Cannibal corpse, At the gates, carcass.. I generaly play in tunings from B - D... I want to pierce flesh with this sound, its gotta be aggressive n tough! :)

Id aso like to be able to play clean at some points :)

Could you explain to me what the cool n hot rails are?

Cheers

Re: Jackson DK2FS Pickup Change

Alright man I'll give youa rundown on the rails:

Cool rails: A medium output, single coil sized, railed, humbucker. It has good lows and low mids with fair upper mids and highs. Sounds nice clean or distorted. It's more chimey than the Hot rails as well as versatile

Hot rails: A high output, single coil sized, railed, humbucker. It has a deep low end that makes for great crunchy power chords, as well as thick mids that let solos cut. Highs are tapered off, but still chunky, not thin.

Hope that helps man!

Hi Forever Blind I replaced the stock Duncan Designed bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan Synyster Gates Invader and the middle pickup with a Duncan Performer. What a Beast she is now!!

But, I turn the FS boost down to about half and put the selector switch one position between the bridge and middle pickups to get a really sweet almost heavy singing cello sound that blows me away.
